pedal board...order? why?

hi,

im currently in the propcess of buying a few more pedals ive had my eye on and going to build or buiy a pedal board to keep them all i/on.

i know notihng about chains and why some boss pedals have a return and a loop input/output aswell as jsut the normal input/output????

on my pedal board i hope to end up with the boss tu-2 tuner, ns2 (noise suppressor), my visual sound jekyll & hyde, fuzz pedal (probably gettign the tweak fuzz), a phaser pedal (no idea yet) an octave pedal and a cry baby wah pedal.

how would all those fit in the chain? why? how?

please give me some info on this and why they go in that order.

thanks

Re: pedal board...order? why?

the phaser pedal you should try before and after your distortion units cause it will sound different but work fine in either place.

the wah pedal is the same, although generally most people like them before distortion units.

the tweak fuzz depends largely on whether its based on silicon or germanium transistors. most germanium fuzzes pretty much need to be first in the chain otherwise they act up. silicon is more flexible though.

the octave pedal is the same, most of them benefit from being first in the chain.

the tuner should be out of your main loop cause those things suck tone like no tomorrow.

the noise suppressor im not sure because i have never used one.

Re: pedal board...order? why?

how do i put the tuner out of the chain? cant i use it to silence every other sound for a sdilent stage tuning?

how will i know what order to use all the pedals in? will it be obvious? if the pedal isntt a phaser or octave pedal should i be alright to have them in any order i want them to be on a pedal board?

how will i know where i can have the tweak fuzz?

thanks

Re: pedal board...order? why?

Simply experiement until you find an order that sounds best. You can't hurt any pedal buy putting it in the "wrong" order.

Thats the whole reason to use pedals if you ask me. If you wanted to have your effects in a preset and fixed order, theres tons of multifx units that are simpler, much cheaper and that have preset recalls.

So just try it out. See if for example you like the distortion after the wah or before it. Totally different sound and both sound good and have their fans.

I mean come out, guys have hooked their wah's up backwards before, ON PURPOSE even and gotten some really cools sounds, Gilmour I think it was ?

Its just all about creating something cool and fresh sounding for me. Theres only so many pedals out there and 90% of guys have similar stuff in a similar order so you've got to think outside the box and bit to come up with something a little different sometimes.

I've heard a lot of people say this, but I've never found it to be true, and I'm using a buffered Boss TU-2. I place it near the front of my chain (second if I'm using a wah, and third if I'm also using a fuzz).

+1
the boss tu-2 tuner has a decent buffer. it should not suck tone.
put it after your wah/fuzz/phaser and it should be good.

Re: pedal board...order? why?

ok thats great, im actually buying the TU-2 so if it doesnt suck tone i should be ok with it.

in my head im starting out in the chain with

Phaser>>Wah>>fuzz>>>tuner>>>>octave>>>>distortion>>>octave>>>pickup booster

then a NS-2 in there somehwere. any idea where that fits best?

thanks

Re: pedal board...order? why?

Allow me to hijack your post for a second devilfish, I was actually going to post a thread just like this but you beat me to it.

I've been playing for awhile but was always hesitant about using effects. I always wanted the audience to hear ME play and not hiding behind a bunch of effects like I have seen other guitarists do that I've played live with. I've decided a basic pedal board wouldn't hurt.
Anyway, I want to get a basic pedal board. I have a Boss NS-2 Noise Suppressor, a Boss SD-1 Super Overdrive, and a Fender PT100 floor tuner. I am eventually going to get a Boss DD-3 Delay and a Boss Chorus to complete the board.

I don't know much about pedal boards but is a Boss BCB-60 considered a decent pedal board? And if you had the pedals that I have and plan on getting how would you set them in order?

its a lump of moulded plastic. Fine fo the money but there are many others, look into furman and pedaltrain boards. Much more sturdy not as cheap.

Tuner > Overdrive > Chorus > Delay

I don't use a noise suppressor, so I'm not sure if I'd put it near the front or rear of the chain. My concern would be whether or not it would cut off the tails of the delay.

Being able to use effects well requires as much, if not more in some cases, skill as any guitarist playing straight into his amp.

Was Andy Summers hiding behind his chorus ?

Does David Evans aka The Edge use stereo delays to cover up the fact he can't hold a rhythm ?

Was Hendrix using a wah as a crutch because he couldn't play a good lead ?

Is Matt Bellamy using the fuzz factory to distract us from realzing he's got no chops ?

Of course not, those guitarist, all of which are amazing, simply intergrated effects as part of their signature style/tone.

No one is wondering what Bellamy sounds like without his effects because the effects are part of who is he as a guitarist. I wouldn't want to hear him play dry.

Same with Jimi, I'd of darn well wanted to get to see him jamming with is wah, octovio and fuzzface. Jimi being Jimi would still probably be a treat to watch playing straight into an amp.

But come on, if for some reason he had his pedals stolen before a gig and had to play without them, wouldn't you be a bit let down if you had to hear machine gun without the Uni-vibe and other effects he used to whip that track into the sonic choas that made it so awesome in the first place ?

I wouldn't use a noise suppressor at the end of the chain as it will clamp down and kill any reverb or delay trails and sound quite unnatural. Setting it so it allows them to decay naturally basically means its not doing its job though.

Granted that it can sound cool as a special effect though. Think of the clamped down drum sounds Genisis used to do.

Might be fun to experiment with for kicks though so give it a try, mabye you'll stumble upon someting cool

Re: pedal board...order? why?

thanks kgmessier, thats what I thought it would be.

Anyone have an idea where the noise suppressor should go? Before or after the delay?

I totally understand that...which is why I've decided to get a basic pedalboard. The point I was making was that I actually have played with other bands who's guitarists DID hide behind walls of effects.

Re: pedal board...order? why?

in my 'dream' pedal board. the chain would be sometihng like tihs:

Phaser>>Wah>>fuzz>>>tuner>>>>octave>>>>distortion> >>octave>>>pickup booster?????dealy

and where would a noise supressor go?

can anyone see a reason why thast wouldnt be agood idea to have those pedals in that order?

Re: pedal board...order? why?

as i mentioned...depending on the fuzz pedal you buy, it may not behave properly with the wah pedal before it.

but try it and see

the octave pedal will almost certainly suck if you have it turned on and the fuzz turned on. with the 'fuzzed' signal coming into the octave, its chancing of tracking any playing properly are pretty low i would imagine.

and now i just read your post again and noticed you have 2 octave pedals in there??

Theres a million reasons to do it and a million not to.

Why do you want the phaser first out of curiosity ?

I personally like a fuzz before a wah. Not only does it tend to work better with most wahs, but it really intesnifies the wah effect. Hendrix put his wah first though in his chain. Again no right or wrong ways to do it.

I personally enjoy a phaser after the delay as well. I like a modulated delay line which sounds great with a rythmic delay

Boosters usually are better going into distortions as well, not much point in using a clean boost after a distortion pedal which can itself be set for a boost

Lastly you would be better off with an octave into a distortion. It will track better. Any reason why you want to try to get an octave effect on an already distorted signal ?

Re: pedal board...order? why?

hey,

this is jsut me trying to get a rough idea of what needs to be where. i have no plan set on in my head.

i accidently pu 2 octaves in ther...woops.

thinking about it yes i want the octave before the distortion.

i would like the wah on the very right of the pedal board but if its better to go first in the chain then cool.

i got the impression it was best to have the phaser first or at least before the fuzz? or is that not trhe vase?

thanks
