pedal for mid gain

the singer in my band uses a marshall MG250dfx with a marshall MG412A cab with his les paul-style guitar... for a cheap rig it gets pretty good cleans and a decent heavy scooped distortion tone.. but he needs a middle ground for a bit of dirt

any suggestions on pedals that would go well with the clean channel of this solid state amp to create a good mid-gain tone for rythmic chording and maybe a bit of palm muted power chords?.. he'd be using it for mostly open chords so it would have to retain string clarity pretty well (no muddiness like in the MG250's distortion channel).. I'm currently using the "tweed" mode on my mesa roadster for this purpose and it works really well.. for him I was thinking a keeley modded TS9 or a plexi model pedal would do well.. got any ideas?

Here's my shot at it
I'd 1st try a boss GE7 equilizer boost the midrange freaq's 400,800,1.25
and it has a 12 db gain fader as well boost that up too on the pedal or try a boss BD2 Blues driver you can do alot with the mids gain dist with this pedal as well

Re: pedal for mid gain

hereto hear.. sorry if I was unclear.. I meant a midway gain.. not a mid boost.. it's a solid state amp so I don't think pushing it with a mid or treble boost would do anything good.. to reiterate I'm looking for a pedal with a little bit of distortion.. not clean but not close to as much gain as the heavy distortion channel of the amp.. thanks for your response though

Re: pedal for mid gain

You will probably want a pedal to do the gain for you. Some of the better ones are tune preamp pedals. SFX-03, V-Twin, Tubman, Koch, etc. There is the Plexitone and Rock Pedal from Carl Martin. There is also the English Muff'n. These are all good, it is a taste thing.

Re: pedal for mid gain

A keeley modified ts-9 would be a good choice although they are kind of expensive. First, i might try just the stock ts-9 and if it's not quite what you are looking for then send it into keeley. A boss super overdrive is pretty cheap and sound similar to the ts-9 if you wanted something cheap.

Re: pedal for mid gain

Yeah sfx-03. I bought mine cause my modeller did high gain or clean great but mid gain sucked. Now I use the sfx-03 for all the gain, modeller for other effects only.

Very simmilar to what i wanted to say !

* I will try the BD-2 first though :smokin: - love that pedal !

* Also, the MXR 10Band EQ, although more expensive than the Boss unit has a Vol. Slider & a seperate GAIN Slider for extra grit !!!

* Also, a mid-gain OD/Booster that i have extreme GAS for is this 2-in-1 units from MXR :

(scroll down for some tasty clips)

. . . going by the MF sound clips ony, if the real thing is as good as those, i WILL get one very soon indeed !!!

My 2cents
;)

Re: pedal for mid gain

I used to have an MG50 about 6 years ago, didnt care for it much, but the SD-1 I used with it gave me some reasonable mid gain tones.

Re: pedal for mid gain

I've also heard good things about keeley modded DS-1 ... anybody played that "tweed in a box" pedal by Boss?.. it's like some collaboration with Fender
