Pedal for more gain with a JTM-45?

Im trying to find something to add more gain to my jtm-45 but im not sure where to go at.. this would be to replace the damn mt-2 that isnt quite giving me what i want.. and i dont necesseraly want more output because i want to keep the clean/od/distortion levels pretty balanced.. i go from clean to od with a sd-1 to high gain with the mt-2 but im finding the mt-2 to not be waht im looking for.. any suggestion as to what i should try?

MI Audio Crunchbox.

As much gain as you'd want from it. And it does the Marshall sound VERY well.

Or top of the range pedal... Carl Martin Plexitone. I can't wait for mine! It has less gain than the Crunchbox I'd say but with 2 OD channels and a clean boost is way more versatile.

Both have a Marshall sound and should therefore make your own JTM45 sound heavier and more modern, but still like a Marshall. Basically have a Plexi preamp with that JTM45 Bassman alike poweramp.

I think the Boss Mega Distortion sounds great when used to give a heavy distortion tone to vintage-toned tube amps. It can get about as heavy as the MT-2, it cleans up better, and it is a lot smoother at any setting.

I'll using a V-Stack Classic in front of my Bluesbreaker RI... and I'm not looking to trade that one away as it think it's a perfect match.

The V-Stack is very Marshally plexish sounding with extremly versatile and long ranging controls. It'll do an very good "on the verge of breakup" tone that matches the clean tone of the Bluesbreaker perfectly... almost no tone altering and then it goes all the way up to way way more distortion than I'd ever use. I always stay on the left side of 12 o'clock with the drive knob.

Then you've always got the Zvex Box Of Rock, that is supposed to do the dimed JTM45 thing. I don't know how low and high overdrive/distortion goes on it.

I second the box of rock. It has a pure boost function as well, I have a feeling once you hear the pure boosted Marshall you might use that exclusively and forget diode clipping.

I wish Fulltone would get their new GT-500 out on the market! I have a feeling it'll be the ultimate pedal in front of a vintage Marshall. Better to pay more and have something you'll love for years.

Get an SFX-03 and you'll have both low gain and high crunch in one pedal...no more SD-1 needed...unless you really wanna get nuts!

I've said it a million times before: ditch both pedals and get a G2D classic. If you need more gain ask the G2D guys to build in more gain or get their custom overdrive pedal instead. But the best tonal match for your JTM45 will be the classic. Trust me, you won't even look sideways at a Fulltone, radial or Carl Martin after you hear one.

As for the MI audio stuff, for your needs I'd look at the blues boy deluxe out of their range. The crunch box is cool, but not a particularly effective marshall overdrive emulator to my ear.

Dunno try the lot out there...sometimes the odd thing might surprise you with the right amp!!!
And nothing really sounds like a Marshall, if it is not going through a Marshall, and Marshall sounds are plentyful!!

I will give my usual best sound for the least money tirade, JTM45s? Well MXR dist +, you don't get more classic than this, Randy Rhoads, Accept "Balls to the walls sound" Less than 60 dollars.

all sounds like cool choices.. im looking at the plexitone and the g2d custom (i listened to the calssic and it didnt seem to be enough for what im looking for).. wish i could hear all of those pedals it would help me decide, cant seem to find any store arround here that has any of them.

Some of you seem to suggest pedals for low to mid gain kinda vintage vibe, and altho i love that kinda sound and play with it half of the time (hence why i got the jtm-45 in the first place) im looking for higher gain stuff... dont play blues all the time and my band is primarily a metal band lol, i go from clean funk rythm stuff to full hard distorted metal riffs often, often lots of palm muting involved where i need some "chunk".. hence why i got the mt-2 in the first place, think hard rock or metal stuff.. the sd-1 is for now pretty satisfactory for the lower gain type of stuff.

i got and old brown beat up one taht looks like crap i found for like 15$ at a pawn shop... at first i tought it was cool but then i sort of grown tired of it and didnt like it much at high volumes for some reason... there was always something missing, could be a cheap or broke or moded one or i dont know.. maybe ill try it out again give it annother chance

Two words:

"The Internet". Check out the Harmony Central classified section and spam thread in the effects forum. Also check out the Gear Page. People flip like new effects all the time, and if you don't like something you can do the same. It kind of sucks that you need to put the cash up front, but in the end it's better to demo it with your own stuff for a week, than try it at the store on other gear.

The Plexitone is more suited for Marshalls & sounded great thru a JTM45.

One of those & the Sovtek 12AX7LPS or a Shuguang 9th Generation 12AX7 in V1 should get you there pretty damned fast :bigok:

Maybe try a plug in SS rectifier tube too

Does your JTM have KTs or EL34s ?

if im not mistaken, didnt Gary Moore use a ds-1 with one?

or did he use a 50w plexi,

anyway, his tone on his metal stuff is insanely f***ing AWESOME!
