so im playing with my barber ltd and just up-ed it to 18v and i like the change, now im thinking about changing the chip. any ideas? it says 072bd then jrc 4030g and i know nothing other than the old ts used jrc 4558. any suggestions as to what will work and might sound good would be sweet thanks!

Re: pedal guys, chips

Eh, I'm not 100% sure, but it sounds like you probably have a TL072 chip in there. That one's a nice, low-noise dual op-amp. If it is the TL072, any dual op-amp rated over 18V should work as a replacement. If it's socketed, it might be fun trying a few out and seeing what you like.

The JRC4558 is a classic chip that would be worth a shot. Its not made anymore, but from what I've heard the RC4558 is virtually identical.

The Burr Brown OPA2604PA is a little expensive, but some people rave about em:

Dunno bout many more though.

Edit: Fixed the link on the BB chip.

My favorite chips are the ones we get at the Mexican place down the road from work. The new bus-girl who brings them is pretty sweet, too.

Re: pedal guys, chips

I could hear it between the 4558D/DD and the TL072. Probably because they're very different sounding opamps to start with.
But between the DD and the D for instance the difference was WAY more subtle.

I have limited experience with chips, I still want to try the LM353 and the 833 (which incidentally is in my Crunchbox!) but so far I'm really happy about how the TL072 sounds. It just fits the TS circuit very well I find. Less midhump, a slightly more clear/hifi sound. At least that's how it sounded in both my SD1 and Route 66 (both TS circuits).

But I do think that upgrading all the components first, keeping the same value, is probably more worth it than just swapping the opamp. Doing both is probably the best thing to do. Especially on a SD1, upgrading the clipping diodes, tone capacitors, maybe swap a resistor or two, would most likely make more difference than a new opamp. But the new opamp would probably just make it 'WOW' as opposed to 'ah much better!'

Though about your pedal Jeremy, the opamp is probably the only thing you could swap, I'd wager everything else is top quality.

Re: pedal guys, chips

jeremy,
I'd like to know how you like the LTD.

everyone likes the Direct Drive, and the fact that they're kind of "transparent", but I got one and I must be the only person who didn't like that pedal.

I thought the "transparency" translated to "lack of character" :)

but then, I really don't mind the mid hump in a TS pedal

I think my ear has gotten a little better since I've been on the forum though, and I've been considering giving one of those another try.

Re: pedal guys, chips

i like the ltd, it has some ts flavor or at least a little mid hump but the internal bass and presance controls help tune it. i run mine with the gain at 1 o'clock, tone at 12 o'clock and the volume so its about the same as with the pedal off. but im also running it at 18v for now. it seems to be eating batterys so im not sure how long that will last but it like it better with 18v, a little more open sounding.

ive tried the small fry and i like that very much. the one i tried may have been modded, not sure, but it was really nice. it has four knobs and a mini switch outside and four (i think) internal trim pots. very tunable which i like.

I have the small fry and found that adjusting those internal trims can do a LOT! I spent a number of hours over several days with that thing open adjusting away. i really like Barber's stuff-it is transparent, built to last and a solid value.

I'm interested in the LTD, but would like a Direct Drive.

Cool pedals
