pedal levels question.

I like to run my distortion pedal with my treble cranked all the way up, mids on 8 and bass on 9. I only set the level(volume) at 6.Whenever I see other people using the same one in videos they only set the levels alot lower, like in the 10 to 2 o'clock areas. I tried it and just didnt like the sound. I love how it sounds with my levels cranked. Is it bad for the pedal to crank everything like that? Will it shorten its life span?

Re: pedal levels question.

When recording for vids you dont crank the volume as much because it will start clipping the mic. When playing live or in the bed room you can crank it how ever you want. Recording levels will always be different from room levels when playing. Just like when people scoop out their mids it might sound good alone but in a mix no.

Re: pedal levels question.

What distortion is it and what are you playing through ?

MXR Fullbore Metal into a little Marshall MG mini stack. Keep the actual amp flat and do all of my tone shaping with the pedal since its essentially my amp and always on. Just a bedroom setup.

Re: pedal levels question.

Those knobs are there so you can make it sound right for your setup.

If every pedal only sounded good on one setting, why would they bother installing adjustable parameters?

EQ with your ears... not your eyes. Used to see that all the time... kids with a 6505 on one side and a JCM800 on the other, frustrated because they pointed all the knobs the same direction but they still sound differennt.

So you're saying that a JCM800 can sound like a 6505?

Re: pedal levels question.

No... I'm saying they're completely different rigs and that to even get them to sound similar you'd have to EQ them completely differently. Likewise, two pedals running into two different amps will sound different at the same settings.

Everything needs to be tuned and adjusted to work together. There's no magic setting that makes every piece of equipment sound awesome... but if you know about gear and how everything interacts with everything else, you can make anything sound pretty good.

Re: pedal levels question.

Cranking the pedal will do it no harm at all. If you love the sound you're getting - carry on, don't get worried about how other people set their pedals.
