Pedal Mods

Can anyone give me a reputable name or business to which I can send a pedal to get modified quickly and without breaking the bank? I need a mod on my Crybaby and can't seem to get anywhere from the local guitar techs.

Re: Pedal Mods

what kind of wah is it? personally, i'd just look up the schematic for whatever wah I(you've) got, google some common mods, and get the required parts @ radioshack since it's usually just swapping out capacitors, resistors, and maybe a diode.

Re: Pedal Mods

Yeah man, you can pick up a soldering iron for less than 30$ and then you're off to the races. It's really not all that hard to do . . . plus, if you don't like it you can always tweak it/set it back to the way it was.

Re: Pedal Mods

While the above is true, some pedals can be easily destroyed by clumsy soldering with a cheap iron. I lifted a few pads when modding my Boss, DS-1. I consider myself lucky that I didn't kill the pedal. If you're brand new to soldering, I'd recommend finding some online tutorials and videos on how to solder, pay close attention to what they say, and find some junk boards and parts to practice on first before taking a soldering iron to your pedal.

Re: Pedal Mods

What is it you want out of the wah? More treble/mid/bass? There is a very simple mod for that for all standard crybaby style wahs. I did it to my Snarling Dog and it sounds pretty amazing. I wasn't sure whether it would work because it's not your every day wah, but the schematics were close enough I was able to do enough research to make it work. And I have pretty much ZERO experience modding pedals, and very little with using a Soldering Iron. I've just installed pickups, haven't work on small PCBs much.

Basically, it's could cost you as much as $50 to send it away to be modded. It literally cost me 3 dollars to mod my wah, for some capacitors at the local radio shack.

Re: Pedal Mods

Or if we could get John to just tell us what he mods on them, then we could do it ourselves. (I have an 847 that is true bypass but that is the only mod so far)

Re: Pedal Mods

Just do some Googling. I did about 4 or 5 mods on an old PCB-style Crybaby a long time ago, all based on info I found on Google. The mods worked as advertised and were very easy to do. Get a soldering iron and some parts from radio shack and get crackin'!

Re: Pedal Mods

Wanted to get into modding so far all ive done is the wah and I found it easier then doing pickups (except for changing the inductor but to start off with don't bother with that)

The right inductor and pot does make a vocal/tonal difference, but it goes along with doing the right mods to the rest of the circuit...You're just changing the way the filter works...A wah is a frequency filter basically...The transistors and how much gain the wah has also makes all kinds of difference. It's a combination of not just one change, but many..Depends on how vocal you'd like your wah?

Re: Pedal Mods

...or if you really don´t want to do it yourself someone on here may be willing to help you out.

Where are you based?

Re: Pedal Mods

There's tons of info on the net...

I know. And I think I have read all of it at one time or another.
May go back and read it all again I suppose. Its just that every one says replace the stock 33k with a 68k. Some clydes have a 100k here.
then the next site says
"I replaced the 33k with a 39k. The oft suggested 68k was too sharp for me"
then
Replace the 470 ohm resistor (some have 390 or 510) at the emitter of Q1 with a lower value. Try 270 - 330 to start
then
Replace the 1K5 resistor between the base of Q1 and the inductor with a larger value. Try 1K8 to 2K7

So we have 5 or so mods, with multiple values for each. i was just curious to your personal experience since your mods have gotten such rave reviews, and you personally said you prefer your modded wah over the more expensive units. I would love to send my wah to you (as many of us would) but understand why you have stopped doing them. So as a second option I wanted to mod my 847 to match what you have done to yours.

If you really want to get fancy you can solder in mini potentiometers where those resistors are so you can tweak your wah to your heart's content.

Re: Pedal Mods

I never tried their mods but I heard Monte Allums is good. I have had Keeley and Analogman mods before but they are more expensive. I had a Keeley modded DS1 and TS9. The TS9 was great but I hated the DS1 mod. I had an Analogman modded OD9 and wished I kept the OD9 stock.

I Like using BC109Bs.....For gain set of Q1 I normally use a variable outside mounted "Gain Pot" that allows Q1 to toggle between 330 ohms and around 510 ohms...The lower these numbers, the more gain Q1 sees....If I decide on one resistance value instead of a board mounted trimmer or the pot,I like either 330 or 390 ohms...You can't just change 1 thing though...I always go with a better inductor and a pot that has good taper....I Like to bring both of the .01 caps up a bit to .012.One of these .01 caps changes the frequency taper of the wah(Some wahs have selectable/switchable cap values, but I stick with my one favorite value)..If you go too crazy here, the wah gets boomy and muddy in the lows...Increase the 1.5k midrange resistor to no more than 2.2k though I like 1.8 to 2k here and I normally use a 5k trim pot and adjust to taste...Lower the 68k input resistor to 47k or 56k or use a trim pot on the pcb instead there also but only if you convert to true bypass...I adjust each and every wah by ear that I Mod...

I don't like the stock MPSA18 trannies and those are the first to go...They are too gainey and I like a wah that is vocal but also articulate...The gain pot is nice because you can dial the wah in for humbuckers or single coils and change the gain on the fly..

I Love the Whipple inductors,as they make the wah beefier and warmer, but slightly darker...This is where you use your ears to dial the wah into your setup by tweaking cap and resistor values...

The whipple inductor can be bought on E Bay...I Love Fulltone pots the best, but we can no longer buy them direct...I have a pretty good selection of Allen Bradley and earlier wah pots that I keep for my own mods...

Keeley's SEM for the DS1 was horrible.....

THANKS! Now I have to sort through all this info and start buying parts!

This Fulltone pot?
this Whipple?
Also has a complete KIT that includes the switch, but I already have that switch and the pot doesnt say it is a fulltone.

Fulltone pots aren't currently available to consumers anymore because guys like me were modding wahs that sounded better than Mike Fuller's wahs....LOL..
