Pedal Nonsense

Re: Pedal Nonsense

The gold standards for flangers are the ADA and the MXR. Both bring pretty big dollars on eBay. I always used the Boss BF-2. They're still in production, so the used prices stay pretty low. Considering the price and the amount of space they take up on my pedalboard, I always thought they were "good enough" compared to the MXR that my hero Andy Summers played.

Since you're just experimenting, don't blow big bucks on a flanger until you're sure you like it. Buy a cheap used BF-2, you can't really go wrong.

Re: Pedal Nonsense

I have always liked the Boss BF2 flanger that i bought in 1989-ish... Think it's a BF2.... anyways they are around at used stores alot and they are a good flanger.

I saw The Atomic Punks guitarists pedalboard and he has a Boss Flanger and a MXR Phase 90.. They are an LA based VH Tribute act and really good at it. He also uses 5150 heads thru Marshall cabs which i guess is easier to get Ed's tone over trying to get a stock Marshall to sound like Ed's.......

Re: Pedal Nonsense

Actually, the BF-2 and BF-2b have been discontinued and replaced with the BF-3, which is the Guitar and Bass versions in one box.

Also look for an MXR Flanger. One of my favs. If I didn't want to keep my flanger and delay, I'd sell them but they're old and they work. BOSS DD-2 and BOSS BF-2B (Bass version).

Another vote for the MXR Flanger -- not the MicroFlanger, which is pretty cool but the gray, 4-dial one. Has remarkable versatility, and the manual dial is very cool because it allows you to manually sweep it. Now obviously you're not going to be reaching down to the floor and sweeping it with your hand while you're playing, but you can set it in a position for this airy, throaty, almost vocoder-like sound that's pretty cool.

Yeah, I love that big floor monster. I only wish I still had one. I sold mine about 10 years ago. :smack: The closest replacement I could find, cheaply, was the BF-2B. The bass version just sounds warmer due to it being voiced for bass. A guitar through it sounds really nice, not ice picky.

Re: Pedal Nonsense

The local shop here in Ontario has a used early 80's MXR Flanger.... the one with an AC Cord on it. $99 Canadian

just stick your finger in the tape recorder dammit!

The EHX electric mistress rules though.

Re: Pedal Nonsense

For the Van Halen effects, if it is pretty noticeable (Ain't Talkin Bout Love, And The Cradle Will Rock (more obvious)), it's a flanger. If it's less noticeable, it's a phaser (Eruption). He used his phaser as a booster/effect for solos, and the flanger as more of an effect.
