The gold standards for flangers are the ADA and the MXR. Both bring pretty big dollars on eBay. I always used the Boss BF-2. They're still in production, so the used prices stay pretty low. Considering the price and the amount of space they take up on my pedalboard, I always thought they were "good enough" compared to the MXR that my hero Andy Summers played.
Since you're just experimenting, don't blow big bucks on a flanger until you're sure you like it. Buy a cheap used BF-2, you can't really go wrong.
