Pedal Review---Not what you think!

Over the years I have acquired a few pedals.... delays, chorus, reverb, switching boxes, distortion, overdrive, modulation effects, multi-effects,....etc.

So, the last week or so, call it fall cleaning if you like, I have been re-auditioning each and every pedal in my possession.

There is going to be a massive sell-off soon.

For delays, I will be keeping just 4... ( I had 8 of them) the Carbon copy, the Strymon Brigadier, the Hardwire DL-8 and the SD Deja Vu.

Reverbs, just one, the Verbzilla.... such a under-rated reverb.

For Chorus, again just one,... a Danelectro 18 volt Cool cat.

I have yet to find a distortion or overdrive that I like, they will all go.

I don't really know why I purchased so many..... but soon I will be simplifying my whole setup.... that is for sure.

Good for you. Change is good.

Now go out and get some fuzz pedals with all of your proceeds. I've got my eye on this one:

Nah...if you want a MK 1.5 don't bother with the Sunbender.

I'm a BIG fan of Mike and his pedals but the Sunbender is just a slightly tweaked Sunface and doesn't at all sound like a MK 1.5 Tonebender to me...in fact it sounds like a good Sunface and not much else.

REEEally now...

And yeah, four delays is way too much. I'm beyond happy with my Memory Lane Jr and El Capistan. I can't imagine needing more than that - besides something like the Timeline or Timefactor with many presets.

Wow...I can't imagine wanting that much delay but I feel ya!

Pfft. I have three delays on my board right now (one of which is a DD-20) and I'm planning to add two more. You can never have too much delay. :friday:

Briggleman, that's a cool board. I have a Verbzilla too and I love it. What kind of music are you playing with all that?

Wow...that's a lot of delay options!

I just can't imagine ever needing that much...I use an Echoplex or a reissue Aqua Puss and have no desire to have anything else and truth is I almost never use either of those!

Yeah, it is quite a lot. I could definitely get by with less, but I love delay so I can't help it.

I just don't like twiddling knobs, so I like to have different pedals set up for different sounds...kinda like presets on a DL4, I guess.

One of the delays I mentioned is a Boss RV-3, so I'm using that for combined reverb and delay to get really spacey and ambient.

The other is my main delay, that I use for a darker medium length repeat; kinda my multi-tasker.

The DD-20 I mostly use as a looper, though I've got some cool presets stored on it...mostly wackier sounding effects, like a 100% wet reverse delay for example, or a nice crisp digital delay set up for infinite repeats to layer sounds with.

It's kind of excessive, I guess, and I'm sure I could get everything I need from just the DD-20, but they all do different things well, I use them all and I don't have to screw around with their settings very often. :)

You are going to love this, the mates and I play everything from Pink Floyd to Johnny Cash, however with the band, I only use the Brigadier and the Cool Cat. Any overdrive or distortion I need comes from my Mesa Express 5:25 mic'ed into the board. When I go acoustic, I use the Carbon Copy with the Cool Cat in the loop coming off of a Pigtronix Keymaster pedal feeding into the board. The Verbzilla is mostly for the acoustic side of things.

I just looked around my music room and saw all this stuff I have been fiddling with,... decided to really concentrate on the sound I want.... and get rid of what I do not use. I will keep a few bedroom effects, the EXH Ring Thing is one, to keep the inspiration flowing.

Re: Pedal Review---Not what you think!

Still going through pedals...... I found a distortion I am going to keep.... and you are going to think I am ..... well tone deaf, nuts, out of my mind..... however my ear is loving the most inexpensive overdrive I have purchased.

Here is the rub.... I think I purchased this pedal and never played it!!!!

As I am going through the cabinet full of boxes of effects... here is a brand new Digitech BAD MONKEY. Open it up, take it out of the plastic wrap, plug it in and .... well WOW!! Folks I love this pedal. What a bargain. Then I started to do some research on it...... and some even compare it to a Klon! There is even a shoot out video between the two.

I should have done this years ago.

Very underrated pedal. Whenever anyone is looking for a cheap tube screamer-ish pedal to tighten up a high gain amp, that's what I recommend.

Yeah, the Bad Monkey, Boss SD-1, Boss OD-3, and MXRs GC Run Classic Overdrive (I just got one for $39 on ebay) are amazing deals.

I hope you find what you are looking for Brad. Sometimes gear can get in the way of what really matters....

It's no wonder you are my favorite Irishman. I think I want a separate board just for delays.
