Pedalboards

In your opinion, what is the best and most cost effective route of going? Getting a board with built in power supply or buying a non-powered board and buying an external power supply.

I've got one of those cheap $50 powered boards they sell on ebay and it has worked well for a while but I have outgrown it. I need power for 8 pedals, 5 Boss sized pedals, a Digitech RP50, Fulltone Fulldrive, and room enough to add a wah pedal later.

Re: Pedalboards

The best route is to get a Voodoo Pedal Power II and a non powered board that has a detacheable lid. There's cheaper ways to go, but the Voodoo PPII electronically isolates all your pedals, and eliminates those aggravating noise gremlins. If you want to make more space on your board, you can get one with a tier/shelf, or just make one. That way, you can hide the PPII and all the excess cabling under it, like bundled power cords or wallwarts.

By the way, I forgot I posted the sentence in your signature. I think I was trying to talk a drunken poster out of jumping in his car for a bootie call. Was it you? LOL

Re: Pedalboards

go with a seperate power supply (the Voodoo Labs Pedal Power II+ is amazing, not cheap but well wort it in the long run) it will power up to 8 pedals, the Boss pedals are no biggie at all, the Fulltone and the wah are also covered...however, im not sure about tht DigiTech...what kind of power does it need?

As for the actual board I can't say enought good things about NYC Pedalboards...it does take a little while to got a board made once you order it (I did order right before Christmas so he was backed up) but the boards are killer, solid high quality boards with removeable lids...all in all great stuff, and Mike is a great guy to deal with!

+1 on that, baby!

Re: Pedalboards

Also, for boards check out NYC pedalboards. I've got one of their mammoth, two-stage boards -- because I'm a rich, touring rock star pro don't 'cha know -- and love it. I hide my PP2 and all my wires 'n' such under the riser, which is slightly shorter than the base to make room for a wah, volume pedal or your a fold-out of your favorite Playboy bunny.

Re: Pedalboards

You can really make your own very easily. The power supply you will need will depend on the pedals you use. I don't use a lot of effects. I have on my small board a CE2, DD3,TS9, Wah and a tuner. I made the board out of an old shelf I had laying around. I spray painted it black and velcrod all the pedals down. I powerd the whole thing using a Visual sound one spot. Works great cost about $50 bucks to do.

I have a second board that is a little more complex that I made for home. I hade some help on this one but it is essentially 2 boards in one. I use a Super reverb and a Marshall 900. THe Marshal has an effects loop and the Fender does not so I had to set up different effects for each amp. I can run both amps at the same time or one at a time if I choose. I use a Morley A/B/Y pedal to switch between the Amps. The setup for my Fender is the same as the one I described above. In the Marshalls loop I have a DOD TR3 that I use delay and chorus. Bottom line is consider making your own. Its not that hard and it can be setup exactly the way you want it rather than have to conform to a store bought board!

I made my own like this too. It has a Vox V848, Boss GE-7, DD-3 and TU-2 and a Marshall DriveMaster. All powered with a "Power Bank" (UK unit that powers up to 5 pedals). Cheap and easy to build. Velcro rocks!

Re: Pedalboards

Here's a picture of my board, when it was new and first assembled. I actually haven't changed anything in a long time. The PPII is under the green L6, and it powers everything. I used lime green zipties to hold all the cables securely.
My rig is so easy to setup. I just plug my footswitch into the amp, put the board on the floor, and use 2 guitar cables, and I'm setup in minutes.

The signal is true bypass through the Fulltone Clyde Deluxe, TRex Mudhoney, Klon, ADA Flange, and Choralflange. The pink loop box brings in the Line 6's or removes them from the chain. The other Loopbox button mutes my signal straight to the tuner. I like being able to setup the sounds on the Line 6's, then simply hit one button in front to turn them on. Then I never have to step deep into my board and do the tapdance.

Re: Pedalboards

I bought mine used from a local guy, and there's no badge on the pedalboard, so I have no idea who made it. I think I gave him around $150 for it.

So everything goes in front of the amp? No effects loop?

I've recently gone back to that setup, after a few years of using effects loops. The only time-based effect I use is delay and I can make that work in front of the amp, so it's nice not having the hassle of the extra cables to wire stuff into the loop.

My new '77 JMP doesn't have a loop anyway. :D

Re: Pedalboards

Here are some of the powered boards I was looking at

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Guitar/Effects?sku=544735

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Guitar/Effects?sku=541961

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Guitar/Effects?sku=159500

and here are some non powered boards

This one looks a lot like Gearjoneser's board. It's cheap so I'd have plenty left over for a good power unit and some good pedal cables but I wonder just how good the quality is.

The gigman from NYC Pedalboards with the 2nd leval looks just like the one above and it's probably better quality but more expensive.

It's not going to get thrown around much, I am as gentle as possible with everything, just the trips to and from practice and the occasional gig. I'm looking at around $300 for the whole setup.

Re: Pedalboards

There's an ebay roadcase company under the Ebay name sdaoust that makes great pedalboards.

The one in your link is OK, except it doesn't have a lid. It's much better if you can carry it like a guitarcase.

Re: Pedalboards

I didn't even notice it didn't have something to carry them in. That guy sells them with a padded bag for like $99.

My board looks just like Gearjoneser's and mine's a NYC Pedalboard so I'm sure that's what his is too.

Re: Pedalboards

I'm currently using an Electro Harmonix Pedal bag for my pedals when I'm gigging.

My pedal chain is as follows:

Spina Modded Vox 847 Wah (Not on board)--BOSS TU2 Tuner--Fulltone Fulldrive 2--G2D Custom Overdrive--Spina modded TS9 Tubescreamer--BOSS CE5 Chorus Ensemble--ZVex Super Duper 2in1

I currently power the wah and Super Duper from batteries, and everything else is powered from a daisy chain from the Tuner.

I also have 1 of those Power Banks which Simon mentioned earlier. But because of where I've had to place my pedals on the board, I haven't actually got room for it on my pedalboard! :smack:

Re: Pedalboards

I think I've come down to two boards. The gig man from NYC pedal boards and an MPS-9 pedal pad.

The gig man with the second tier is going to run about $170 and then I'd have to find an external power supply which I'm probably going to look for something used so I'm going to say around $100 for that. So roughly $270.

I can get the MPS for $279 new off ebay. It already comes with the power supply and I like that the cables can be routed underneath.

So they are pretty much going to be around the same price I just can't decide which one to get.
