Pedals comparable to the Tubescreamer...

I havn't been happy with my Classic 30 and their have been a number of problems with it so I'm exchanging it for a Fender Blues Junior. The only thing I didn't like about this amp was the overdrive, so I will be needing a pedal for this. The Ts9 sounded too compressed to me but it was very close to being perfect. So my question is, what other pedals are made for under 125 USD that are comparable to the Tube screamer and have enough gain to drive a clean channel?

Edit: The only one I know about now is the Voodoo Lab Sparke Drive

Edit2: A modded Ts9 is a possibility.

If the stock TS9 sounded too compressed to you I'd suggest one of Robert Keeley's modified TS9's or a TS9 modded by John Spina (known on the forum as STRATDELUXER97) to open up the sound a bit.

Analogman can also mod a TS-9 to TS-808 specs for you. He also has a TS9/808/silver mod that takes more of the midrange hump out. I have an analogman SD-1/808/silver mod, which is the same mod to the SD-1. A bit grittier. I really like it a lot.

If you are going to get a tube screamer, I might hold on to that Peavey Classic 30. That amp sounds good with any kind of tube screamer going through it.

Also have to add that John Spina modded a boss OS-2 for me, kind of a boss vibe with a TS-9 chip. Much improved over the original.

If you are going to get a tube screamer, I might hold on to that Peavey Classic 30. That amp sounds good with any kind of tube screamer going through it.

+1. Just picked up a TS5 and it adds so much to the Classic 30. Performed TS808 mods to the pedal last night, and think I actually preferred the stock pedal. Just sounds beautiful pushing the front end of the Peavey. Good luck with whatever you do!

IMO, you just described an SD-1. More transparent than a tube screamer and with the Keeley mod you'll spend $125 on a new one and retain the bottom end too.

If you want a cheap tubescreamer clone then get a Digitech Bad Monkey or Screamin' Blues.

I'm partial to my Visual Sound Route 66. Compressor and TS808 clone all in one box, for about $110 or so new on Ebay.

I agree with FretFire, Rte66 is excellent and you can't get any better for that price.

It's a TS9 exactly circuit wise but has the JRC4558D chip and complete full bypass....

Don't rule out the less expensive alternatives. My Danelectro Daddy-O is a great sounding OD pedal, and it's been abused over the years. If it breaks, I'd buy another one. I also like the original Marshall Gov'nor pedal. You set the gain low, and it still sounds good through a Fender combo. I'm a utilitarian. After 25 years of playing, I have no use for the cushy stuff that can't get dirty........my gear gets used, and it better hold up well.

Check out the Boss SD-1, BD-2, and the MXR Wylde OD.

The SD-1 is less compressed than the TS-9, but is still more of a lead boost that does alright rhythm.

The BD-2 is more of a rhythm boost that does ok lead.

The Wylde OD is in between the two.

I'd recommend a Fulltone Fulldrive 2. It has true bypass as well as a compress/uncompress tone switch. All of his pedals are made with high grade components and his copies of vintage pedals are not only identical, but vastly superior. Go to www.fulltone.com to get more info as well as sound samples.

I rather liked the sound of DODs Mystic Blues. Just slightly overdriven.
