Pedals comparable to the Tubescreamer...

Re: Pedals comparable to the Tubescreamer...

Hmm, started really checking out all the pedals suggested in this thread, and others that I came across and was startled by one thing. The highly praised modded Ts9's do not sound like I imagined them too. I listened to the clips on keeley's site, and IMO they weren't doing much screaming. Listening to the others I am now choosing between these:

1. Visual Sound Route 66
2. Voodoo Lab Sparkle Drive
3. Barber LTD
4. Fulltone Fulldrive 2 (this ones way over my limit, but if I find a good deal on ebay who knows)

What I liked about these 4 pedals was that I believe they are more versatile than the tube screamer, they have the ability to give me a little blues breakup, some crunch, and some screaming lead tones.

So...opinions on these 4 pedals?

Rig is Stratocaster (soon to have SD's) -> Peavey Classic 30

One thing, if you're looking for "screaming" leads, the LTD won't give you that, neither will the FD2 though it's capable of a bit more drive in comp cut. Both are nice pedals, though (compressionwise, the LTD falling somewhere between the FD2 in comp mode and comp cut mode).

The LTD is hard to beat pricewise. If you're looking for more "range," you might want to look into the Barber Direct Drive SS which can give you some of what the LTD can give for low level overdrive.

Both are nice for blues with the LTD going more for that pushed Fender feel.

If you decide on the Route 66, Reverend Guitars has a good price on those.

I tried the Barber DD, and felt it lacked character, even though I know that lots of folks like those and the SS model - the LTD is actually LESS drive though.

As for the Fulltone FDII, what can I say - I have two custom shop versions. It's one of the best, most popular overdrives - the first one I know of that was made with the boost feature. If you get one used, I'd suggest the newer version with the little toggle switch in the middle. All of Mike's stuff is top notch quality, and made to last.

I really like my Sparkledrive. It works well with both my Strat and my LP Special. It is very versatile.
