Pedals - Emulated Speaker Outputs

Does anyone use their emulated speaker outputs (ESO) for recording?

I have one on my Blackstar OD and wow does it ever do a good job. I use my amp when I want to lay down a final track, but the ESO is great for trying things out at bedroom level. I did try the ESO before, with headphones, but it was just recently that I got proper monitors and that makes quite a difference. I get a fairly good range of tones -slightly overdriven strat and tele to full on rock without sounding cheesy. Great to work out parts.

I was using my amp but the sound you get when mic'ed up a low volume didn't sound good at all.

I should be picking up a Blackstar HT Dual at the end of the week, so hopefully I'll be able to let you know soon!! :D

Re: Pedals - Emulated Speaker Outputs

Have you thought about getting a Hughes and Kettner Red Box? It is a DI box with emulated outs. So you can get the sound of the amp without having to mic it. Run it with an attenator and you can have it as quiet as you like.

Guitar - Amp - Red Box Output 1 - Speakers/ Output 2 - Mixing board.

A while ago First Act was making a few pedals with emulated speaker outs that people were liking. And doesn't boss make a few as well?

Wow that is really nice (the H and K box) - thanks for the info. I may just get one.

One question - is there a max volume from the output of a tube amp that can go into the red box

I think you will really like your Dist X....though you may have to get some nail polish or paint to put `ticks` on the knobs. They are really hard to tell what position they are in

No it is meant to run at the level between the amp and speakers. The only thing you have to do is set the switch correctly on the box.

Re: Pedals - Emulated Speaker Outputs

Also got to thinking...I had a bit of brain fart when I was first read about it. I had the wrong idea in my head that the amp would not be loud.

I would need to attenuate the signal into the amp so that I can get the advantage of the amp/tubes, but lose the effects of the speaker and mic. My amp sound really nice in the 10W range so maybe a simple attenuator would do the trick. Basically, drop the level of the amp to zero but still be able to record at night with some really nice tones!
