Pentatonic Scales...

I know all 5 box positions of the major pentatonic scale and understand how to move them around to play in different keys but was wondering what else I can do with them. For example I saw Robert S. post about how he works on scales to get ready for gigs, is there any exercises like that to help further ones knowledge of pentatonics? Or what would be the next step?

Re: Pentatonic Scales...

Try playing different notes together.
Try stretching strings with all of your fingers.
Try stretching 2 strings at the same time.
Work on a strong vibrato, and other dynamics of touch, power, softness.
Play with your pick and your fingers.

Re: Pentatonic Scales...

For a Southern Rock style, use "pre-bends" to fake (emulate) the tone of an upper fret, then release the tension to the relaxed fret position.

Does that sentence make any sense? I hope so.

Re: Pentatonic Scales...

Mix the major pentatonic with the blues scale.....an almost endless source of blues, country and rock licks.

Re: Pentatonic Scales...

throw it all out and learn the natural minor and major scales..those missing 2 notes can make the difference between sounding like everyone else and coming up with something original.

Re: Pentatonic Scales...

Play them (preferably over a chord change) and listen to them. I'm not being sarcastic, its a thing a lot people don't do much at the begining, since they are more concerned with the pattern structure of the scale.

Also, try playing different pentatonics over different chords i.e. play a Dm pentatonic over a Am chord and see what happens.

Pentatonics are beautiful.
