as for tuners im going with locking tuners, and the nut will be maybe graphite or possibly "TUSQ" since im vegan, im looking into that whole "man-made" ivory thing a little further before i decide. if the TUSQ is comprised of all non animal material then thats probably what im going for.
and before anyone brings it up, my luthier and i have already discussed glues, finishes, and inlays to make sure that i will have a 100% vegan guitar."

Vegan guitars?!?! Is that what this world is coming too? Vegan guitars.......

dead.

In my opinion that whole vegan and vegetarian stuff is pretty stupid anyways... I mean that's how humans have made it so far, we ate meat from animals we hunted when humans still lived in caves. We're just a part of the food chain and animals eat other animals, we're animals at core too.
but that's a pretty controverse topic, this is just my opinion on it. If you want to be vegan or vegetarian, just do it.... it's your choice, just not mine.

although I have to say, I really don't like things from real ivory.... but I doubt that you can get real stuff just like that.
but that other stuff is just stupid... whats the next step? guitars from something else but wood? Oh no! you're hurting the trees by taking the wood! :omg:

Zarg - saying vegetarianism and veganism is stupid because 'that's how we've done it so far' is just pure ignorance. We used to bang our sisters too, doesn't mean we have to. (I am certainly an omnivore btw, just pointing out ignorance). / rant

With that said, yeah, that's going a bit far imo. I wonder how he would react if he found out the wood from his guitar was part of a deforestation project that put species at risk. But...to each his own.

Re: People really care about this?

I don't care if someone wants to go vegan for their own personal reasons, but they become fanatics of the highest order. They constantly have to justify their own beliefs and look down on you for not following them.

On topic, TUSQ is a great material for nuts. It just sounds so good.

Re: People really care about this?

A Vegan, a Lesbian, and an Atheist walked into a bar. I know this because they told everyone there within 3 minutes.

Re: People really care about this?

Can we make a guitar completely from animal products? I'm thinking cat gut strings, bone neck and bridge, tuning pegs made out of teeth? Perhaps a contoured hollow-body design using dried hides?

I'm very sorry. As I said, that was just my opinion on the topic, was not meant to be ignorant at all. I guess it was a bad way to say that its a natural thing to eat meat.

Re: People really care about this?

I think you both have valid points.

On one hand, Zarg is right about meat being a staple of human diets for millennia. And he's certainly not the only person who's grown tired of the meat vs vegetarian vs vegan arguments. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think he was suggesting that someone couldn't/shouldn't be vegetarian/vegan if they choose, rather that the social movements behind these dietary "clubs" in recent years aren't always honest in their claims and approaches.

On the other hand, each person's choice of diet should be respected --> as long as those choices and/or restrictions don't interfere with the dietary choices and enjoyment of food by others.

Having had people leave the dinner table and ruin an otherwise nice evening because I ordered a meat dish, I can tell you first hand that it's easy to take the vegetarian/vegan thing too far, just as it's easy to take the "meat is good" argument too far, as well.

No need to walk on eggshells with our opinions, just be mindful that all of us have our preferences and no way is truly "right" in the end.

The idea of veganism/vegetarianism just makes me want to go get a nice juicy steak!

Or better yet, something cuter... like eating a BUNNY!

Re: People really care about this?

Well, actually we originally were plant eaters when we were apes, and only started eating meat later on in the evolutionary process - we actually have very poor digestion of meat all things considered. Just look at a lot of the diet recommendations - WAY more veg than meat.

And other to that, I can't believe that you actually started this thread in the first place - whats it to you what anybody does with their life..... and what business is it of yours to question a complete stranger's lifestyle??

Answer - None at all.

Now this makes sense to me!

Re: People really care about this?

I don't give a crap what people want to eat or not eat. Just don't try to posture to me that somehow whatever dietary choice that you make somehow translates into your being morally superior.

I'm vegetarian. I'm not your typical type i just don't like eating meat. Its all the new age vegans that really **** me off.

Re: People really care about this?

Kramer - Given all the hormones and god-knows what that typically get fed to livestock to bulk them up, it starts to look like a better and better choice really.

Re: People really care about this?

Not if you hunt it, skin it, pack it out, butcher it, and grill it yourself..... lean and clean and full of protein!
