People's opinions on PRS pups

I know this is probably the wrong place to ask this, but hey, it's the only forum on the whole internet thats worth going on...

My next guitar purchase will be a H/S/S Strat, and I don't know what to put in the bridge. I like heavy rock/metal-type tones, and I have been considering a JB and a DiMarzio Super Distortion. I was on www.prsguitars.com though and some of the samples sound good on the pickups page. Like the PRS 7 for example.

Anyone else used PRS pups in a non-PRS guitar and gotten good results?

Re: People's opinions on PRS pups

What's wrong with the Duncan Distortion. It's one of Seymour's best pickups if you ask me.

Re: People's opinions on PRS pups

I love my PRS CE24, but I don't think it's the the pups that make it (but I can't be sure since it's stock)- Instead I lean towords the inovative wiring and overall great quality as the differentiators and thus far like mine so much that I've never messed with the pups-

So I wouldn't have thought about PRS pups by themselves, althought they are clearly good-

Hope this helps-

Re: People's opinions on PRS pups

I had a LP clone with a set of PRS #7's, and I really dug them. The bridge pup had better clarity and crunch than the Duncan Distortion I have in my new gutiar. The distortion is more powerful and bassy though, and generally a bit meaner. The #7's are very mid-heavy though, and can sound shrill in the wrong guitar, and probably would be too shrill in a strat type guitar.

The pups are pretty good if you ask me, just not my cup of tea. I have an HFS for sitting around due to that actually.

I don't recommend them for your style.

I've had experience with the Dragon II's and HFS's. Neither can do your described style very well, especially not in an alder Strat. They're extremely bassy pup's, and to my ears, sound pretty muddy under high-gain. They do, however, have an amazing feel for jazzy clean stuff.

Re: People's opinions on PRS pups

Thanks for the feedback!

I'll just stick to a Duncan Distortion or a DiMarzio Super Distortion. Or maybe just a S/S/S with Hot Rails. Who knows yet?

Re: People's opinions on PRS pups

i actually heard the dragon IIs and the Santana pups in action. Maybe it could be the effects and stuff. But I felt the Santana is rather warmer and less muddy.

Re: People's opinions on PRS pups

i think PRS pups are overpriced as after market pups and they don't seem to offer anything that would merit the price ... plenty of very high quality aftermarket pups available for not nearly as much money .. and with a 21 day trial period to boot! ..

+1, and the soundclips on their site seem processed and misleading to me... but then again, I feel that way with DiMarzio too. I love how SD has their soundclips set up

Re: People's opinions on PRS pups

Dig the Dragon II's I have on a PRS a got before the non US PRS's hit the streets.
However I will say this. For my own ears and style I dig PRS pickups in the PRS.
But they wouldn't sound right in anything else. Just like I prefer
Gibson pickups in Gibsons. These are the axes geared toward being able to a little bit of everything well.
For all other axes I'ts always been a gut-fest (insert Dimarzio/Duncan pups of choice, solder, tighten, regut, repeat !).
Although their are some older Jackson pickups that I've kept intact.

i have a prs artist treble in my h/s/s strat with alder body and maple fingerboard.
it sounds killer. it measures 9.4k. not sure what kind of magnets but i think it's alnico 2 coz it has that warm, sweet, singing tone associated with a2 magnets. actually, it reminds me a lot of duncan alnico 2 pro's but with more output.
on my guitar, it doesn't sound exactly like the the soundclip on the prs site, but it does have the same voicing.
what i like most about this pickup is that it sounds really good when split and combined with the middle pickup. very straty. lots of quack.
you'll hear no trace of quack in full humbucker mode, which is very good!
