PG Plus Question

I am looking at a fender sold seymour duncan Pearly gates plus and I want to buy it for use as a standard humbucker with other humbuckers with 500k pots

Is there any real difference between this PG plus and a regular PG(other than the color), the spacing is the same.

Any help?

What's the difference between your Pearly Gates pickup and the Pearly Gates Plus on a Lone Star Strat®?
The Pearly Gates is rather different than the "Pearly Gates Plus" that is on the Lone Star StratTM. The Pearly Gates Plus is only available on that guitar and not made for retail sales. The main difference in these pickups is that a Pearly Gates has Alnico II magnets, while the Pearly Gates Plus has Alnico V magnets. Alnico V magnets tend to give a brighter, glassier tone, while Alnico II magnets tend to have a warmer, rounder, more mid-rangier tone. The closest pickup available in our regular line to a Pearly Gates Plus is a '59 Model with 4-conductor cable. The '59 is an Alnico V pickup with a wind very close to that of the Pearly Gates Plus. The '59 usually comes in single conductor cable, but it can be ordered with the 4-Conductor wiring option

I already have a 59 in the neck will the PG plus work well with the 59 neck?

By the way it is going into a Ibanez IcemanX. The reason I bought it is because I got a good deal $80, Should I just return it for a real PG or mabey try it out, I mostly woory that my dirty sounds will sound to transparent like a strat even with the 500k pots.

Any help please!

The PG+ is often threated like the red haired stepchild of the SD line because it is not available for direct purchase and some folks like the PG better but I played the PG+ in a Lonestar through an 18 watt Marshall clone and got killer tone from it.

It should work well with a 59n.

But what about the difference in pots I will be using 500k the lonestar uses 250k.

Looking at the difference between alnico2 and alnico5 it will sound somewhere between a JB and a PG

Its not for a strat but should I try it anyway?

Actually the PG+ is now available to be purchased individually. They retail for $125. from ALLPARTS. I can buy 'em from Allparts and discount them for any board members who might want one. Or you can just get a 59B or 59 Trembucker for around $70. The main diff would be that the coils are matched in the 59 and unmatched in the PG+, hense the brighter & more open mids and overall tone of the PG+. Lew

I want to put it in a les paul style guitar with 500k pots will this bo ok or not?

It is NOT going in a strat

i am one of those people who like the pg way better than the pg+

its not a bad pup, just not what i am looking for. it was paired with the 59n in the big apple strat (i think), its a good combo. i actually like it more in a lp than in a strat

Be prepared to fight with an overly bright bridge pickup with the PG+,especially if your strat is bright to begin with(Strats are,but if yours is already too bright)...I Own the PG+ and it cuts great etc..has good tone but I found in my particular strat that I had to drop to a 250K with the PG+ so lookout... The PG+ is very crisp with the A5 magnet in there.

A buddy of mine bought one of these from a Fender dealer...comes in a Fender box very much like any of their other pups. I was actually there when he bought it. So, I think they've been available for some time. This was over a year ago.

Personally, I don't like the PG+ at all. Too thin. I'm using a FSb in an ash strat, so I like bright tone, but the PG+ just doesn't cut the mustard overall. To each his own, but I think the PG sounds much better.

I have an alder/maple board fat strat with the PG+ in the bridge. Admittedly, I have to tweak it a bit to decrease the treble, but on the whole its quite a nice pickup. It has a LOT of cut through, and on middy sounding amps like an AC30 it rawks. High gain can get a bit much sometimes, but overall I'm happy with it. I would like to swap the magnet out though and give the A2 a blast to see what happens.

Yep, I hear ya John. I've gotta say though that the white JB I put in my Lone Star sounded so much better (to me, of course) and my Strat still looks stock! I like my PGn pickup alot, I just don't care for the sound of my PG+. I think when I get the time to work on it, I will switch the mags out...might even try an AIII!
