Phase 90 mods?

Re: Phase 90 mods?

My main gripe with the Phase 90 I played was a mid boost. And when the mids get pushed in my amp, it breaks up. So those phasey cleans that are wonderful were really difficult to cop. The Wylde Phase solved the problem for me, and the only reason I got it was because it was a Black Friday deal. Really great expense of thirty bucks. But Erik is the man.

Re: Phase 90 mods?

How does the Wylde roll? I'm gonna re-finish this Phaser anyway.

Re: Phase 90 mods?

The Wylde is the first phaser I could ever gel with. I haven't tried a whole lot of them, but the Phase 90 had that mid boost issue, and I have a PH-3 that destroyed the top end and was very tough to dial in. The Wylde solved both those problems, but again, I just don't have a breadth of experience. I've never even played a Small Stone.

Re: Phase 90 mods?

How does the Wylde compare to say the EVH on script mode? Anyone???

Re: Phase 90 mods?

I think each of the Wylde pedals are tuned or modded to sound best with Zack Wyldes setup... For a while he was using the EVH phaser on his board before Dunlop/ MXR gave him his own phaser

Which could just be EVH in Script mode with $10 kick back to ZW.

Re: Phase 90 mods?

I'm curious to know myself. Haven't had a chance to dig in to the Wylde model. Haven't even heard it.

Re: Phase 90 mods?

I'm 95% certain the Wylde is an EVH stuck in script mode.

Here's a quick run-down of each of the MXR models:

Phase 90: block logo only
EVH Phase 90: modern guts, switches between block and "script" mode
Custom Shop Script Phase 90 w. LED: EVH guts stuck in "script" mode
Wylde Phase: same as above (not completely certain of this though)
'74 reissue Phase 90: an accurate re-issue of the original - completely different guts than the others

To my ear, the 74 is the nicest sounding. You lose the LED and the DC jack though.

Re: Phase 90 mods?

For a time the block logo model had the EVH guts stuck in block mode. It's not that way anymore from what I've seen.

I haven't done mods in a long time so that page is pretty much in "informational mode" now.

Re: Phase 90 mods?

The Zack Wylde model is supposedly the EVH phase 90 WITHOUT the script button engaged.

There's a an easy mod somewhere where you clip/ desolder 2 resistors that brings it close to script specs- I did it and the pedal sounded alot clearer

Is it a reversible mod? It sounds like it, and I'd do it, but I usually want the peace of mind knowing I can go back to the way things were before.

Re: Phase 90 mods?

A friend of mine parked his car on top of his Phase 90 for a couple of days ... wheel right on top of the pedal. He told me that after that, it sounded more compressed.

This would be awesome! Who knows where that is???

Re: Phase 90 mods?

I have the Whirlwind Rochester Series Orange Box, it was designed by a guy from the original MXR Innovations company, and is an exact script Phase 90 replica, but with the added advantage of LED and true bypass. Sounds as good as the Dunlop MXR Custom Shop '74, but doesn't have to be modded to have the LED and TB. I recommend it highly. I have all three of the first series Rochester pedals (Orange Box/Phase 90, Gold Box/Distortion+/, and Red Box/DynaComp). All of them are exact script MXR replicas with LED and TB, and the first series is signed in gold or silver ink inside the back plate by the designer. All are great, and made with the same quality components as the originals.
