Phase switch noise problem

Hello.

I attached a phase switch for my tele. I followed the wiring diagram from Seymour´s main site. The nasal sound is there but I´m experiencing a terrible noise when I activate the switch. Actualy there is more noise than sound from the pups. :34:

I double checked the ground and seems ok.

What else could it be?

Seems to me as if you have grounded something wrongly (or failed to ground it altogether).

If you are reversing the phase relationship between two single coil pickups, this will also negate any reverse wound/reverse polarity noise-cancellation effect.

If you are using a traditional tele pickup you have to ground the cover of the neck pickup or bridge plate of the bridge pickup. Making the cover or bridge plate hot will create a lot of noise.

If you are using a 2 cond. + shield or bare wire or a 4 conductors + bare or shield wire then, the issue can be in the jack side.

Its a 2 cond + bare wire.

Swapped the covered wires and there is less noise. But where should I connect the bare wire?

THis sounds to me as though you haven't disconnected the screen on the neck pickup from the return wire of the pickup.

You have to do this and then run a separate wire from the screen to ground.

Without having looked at the wiring schematic that's my best guess.

Also, it's not a phase switch; it's a polarity switch. There is no such thing as a phase switch, not in passive guitar circuitry.

Grounded the bare wire to a pot insted to the switch and the noise is gone. Thank you octavedoctor.

I know. I'm such a pain in the arse; but I'm on a mission to re-educate.

As long as errors go unchallenged, poor quality information will be propagated and failure to understand will arise.

As I always say, knowledge without understanding is like a baby with a loaded gun...

I see. So it's switching the bridge pickup, not the neck.

Either way, it's the same deal. you have to separate the ground wire (and on a classic tele bridge p/up that involves cutting the wire connecting the black return wire to the copper baseplate as well, then grounding the base plate separately) and ANY screen or earth wire.

I always switch the neck p/up it's easier. No messing with the saddles to get the bridge off.

A problem with the Telecaster is that the return wire often runs to a solder tag connecting it to the graphite screen before going through to the control cavity. While it is most important that you disconnect any link between the return wire and the bridge earth (because the return wire becomes the signal wire when you reverse the polarity) if you forget about the link to the screen of the bridge pickup rout then you can still get noise coming through. However I believe this screen is only found on the US models, not the Mex or imports, or Squiers.

Correct me if I'm wrong on this...

Yep the switch is for the bridge pup. And I have a P90 on the neck. So there are no more issues as far as I know.
