Phase switching

Hello folks, I'm new to the forum, so please be kind.
I have a pair of Gibson 496 & 500 pickups, one wire plus braid, is there any way of adding a phase switch? The only info I can find is for 2 or 4 wire, if anyone could help with a wiring diagram, I woud be greatful.
Thanks,
Brian.

Welcome to the forum

Braided wire is 2 conductor. It's also known as single conductor. If you have a diagram for phase switching with 2 conductor, use that and treat the braided shield as the ground wire of the pickup.

Re: Phase switching

The problem there is that you add the chassis ground (full of noise) to the hot signal when the phase is flipped.

Thanks for your input AlexR, the pickups are uncovered & I intend to switch the bridge, so the likelyhood of touching the pole pieces, or screws, which would be hot, is slim.

Re: Phase switching

Its not the touching that is the issue. The metal parts tend to pick up interference. Its why you have a bridge ground as the metal parts are great antennas. So this buzz gets routed to ground to cancel out the signal. Of course when you put that to hot there is no chance of it going away......think of bad singlecoil hum you can't get rid of.

I'll give it a go & report how Iget on, at worst, I'll just have to wire it back to stock again.

I'd be interested to know how this turns out for you. I am not a big fan of the out-of-phase sound, but some really like it.

I will keep you posted. I quite like out of phase, plus with only 2 wires, it's really the only option I have for an extra tone for just the price of a switch. I know I could convert the pickups to 4 wire to enable me to coil split, but it is more trouble than I wish to go to.
