Re: Phaser: Before or After Dirt?

I do both. I have a Boss PH-1r on my pedalboard, after my Real Tube 901 and before the front end of my Mesa Boogie amps.

Most of the time I use the amp's distortion, so I voted before.

B 4

did I sink yer battleship?

edit: meaning, in front of my mega gain amp. Way too strong in the loop, even with mid-gain drive.

Both. However, 95% of the time it's before. The other 5% is when I'm trying to get whacked out sounds.

Re: Phaser: Before or After Dirt?

yeah. It can sound great, beautiful, after distortion or in the loop. But then it's like the amp is a giant phaser, or the phaser itself is the instrument. I can see doing it that way to record some simple tracks that would sit low in the mix or for a big dramatic but simple part if youse know what I'm getting at. It does sound really cool and powerful like that. But not nearly as musical, like when it's in front instead, when it's only coloring your music and adding some morphing to your sound.

Re: Phaser: Before or After Dirt?

For the longest time, I kept my phaser in the effects loop, after distortion... but a week ago I tried it in front and it just surprised me how different it sounded.

Re: Phaser: Before or After Dirt?

I like how it sounds both ways, but I usually keep it before, since I keep my flanger after my distortion.

Re: Phaser: Before or After Dirt?

Works either way. Generally, I place Modulation effects after Overdrive/Distortion. I suggest that you experiment to see what pleases your ear.

Before for more subtle phasey lead tones. If I use step phasers or something after od can sound wacked out though!

Re: Phaser: Before or After Dirt?

I don't usually use a phaser, but I do use flange and chorus, I like to drive them with the od in front- kinda' like the early Pat Travers sound.

Re: Phaser: Before or After Dirt?

i put my phaser before the drives just to get a touch of that phase tone for soloing. if i put it after the drives, it sounds too phasey. :D

Re: Phaser: Before or After Dirt?

I used my Boss PH-3 before the dirt. I now have a Nova Mod, and I have that one in the loop, as most of the effects in it are better off there. Plus, I can adjust the impact of the phaser effect with the unit, so it isn't stressing me.
