Phaser Issues

I have an ancient Boss PH-1r, and I'm having some problems switching it on. Getting some loud pops, and I have to step on it 6-7 times to get it to work reliably. It might just be dirty...can these switches be cleaned?

If it can't be cleaned, does anyone know of a source for these Boss switches?

If I can't replace the switch, I may need to replace the pedal. I like classic phaser tones. I don't use phasing a lot, so I'm not looking for a $300 pedal. The EVH Phase 90 is one possibility, though it seems a bit limited; or I could just get the latest Boss. Thought about the Hardwire but I've not had much luck with DOD/Digitech phasing. (Love their chorus.)

Is their something else I should be looking for?

On the inexpensive side, the ehx nano is tough to beat. There is a slight level drop when ya kick them on, but thats the only con, IMO.

On the MXR side, IMO the whirlwind is the way to go.. sounds better than the current 74ri, is troobypass, takes a 9v adapter and has an led. Not to mention, designed by the guy who designed all the original MXR pedals.I didnt care much for the evh, it doesnt sound anything like an old script logo. In new pedals, the whirlwind sounds the most like my old script I had BITD.

The Boss sound is more like the EHX, than the MXR. I had a ph2 I used for several years.

Funny thing for me is that I had to buy the $300 phaser, as I realized the phase sound I wanted (original Maestro) was only available in a $300 clone and now my whirlwind and ehx are for sale :D

Re: Phaser Issues

i had a similar problem with an old CE3. In the end it was a broken/breaking wire.
Can't hurt to squirt some contact cleaner in the switch too tho.
Or better still...add one of these:

Cos those old boss modulation pedals are bastards for their complicated and treble sucking bypass setup.
They sound pretty great when "on" tho ;)

ps..if you do decide to move the PH1r on....let me know. I need a new phaser and ive always dug those ones.
I sold my last one (a ph2) mainly cos i couldn't stand the bypass and those clickless units were not available back then.

Your phaser isn't vintage enough...

Re: Phaser Issues

Is the PH3 any better for the tone-sucking bypass issue?

Re: Phaser Issues

I feel like I've seen people install mechanical switches on Boss pedals.

I really, really miss my big old green EHX Small Stone. Not sure what those cost now, but it was awesome.

Re: Phaser Issues

Guys - pay attention - He isn't looking for a one trick Phaser Pony….

But I'm optimistic it can be fixed.
