phasing problem?

my cab is having some major problems.. without my eq on, it sounds like i have overload of mids that i dont have with any other cab whether its superior or inferior to my cab. i played through a cheap ass cab and my amp sounded better than it did through my avatar 4x12. i have a feeling its a wiring problem or something.. its wonky and sounds like my mids are cranked. what does a cab sound like when it has a phasing problem or is wired incorrectly?

Re: phasing problem?

Until you get this issue ironed out DO NOT USE THAT CAB.

If it's a wiring issue you might have an ohm mismatch and ruin your amp.

Re: phasing problem?

i emailed the guys that sent the cab and they said perhaps its because ive had the 1k frequencies dialed out this whole time that that part of the speaker hasnt broken in yet.. could this be an actual possibility?

Re: phasing problem?

I don't know. Set the amp as clean as possible at extremely high volumes and just play the low E string open.

If that doesn't fix it then I would say there's a bigger issue than a speaker not being broke in.

Re: phasing problem?

Well realisticly to get a brand new speaker completely broke in, it would take hours.

Not sure what you could do. Someone else here really needs to chime in.

Re: phasing problem?

if it sounds to you like your speakers are out of phase, there's an easy way to test that. take the terminals of a 9-volt battery and touch them to the contacts on your 1/4" speaker cable, with the other end plugged into the cabinet. watch the speaker cones, they should all either push outwards or retract inwards, depending on the polarity of the battery. if some speakers push out and others go inwards, then they are wired out of phase.

if you're able to open up the cabinet, you can make sure the wiring is correct by comparing it to some wiring diagrams that you can find on the net (avatarspeakers.com has some). is this a 4x12 we're talking about? what is the impedence of each speaker, and what is the desired total impedence of the cabinet?

Re: phasing problem?

8 ohms, 8 ohms, everything is 8 ohms i believe. its a 4x12

im going to do that battery test tomorrow and hopefully find out what the big problem is.

i dont think i can open the cab.. the speakers are front mounted but ill email the guy at avatar anyhow and see what he has to say about that.

i've never liked front-loaded cabinets for that very reason

if you have a few bucks to spare, it wouldn't be a bad idea to pick up a cheap multimeter from radioshack. they don't cost much, and you could measure the resistance if your cabinet and verify that it's wired correctly.
