phat cat for Burny Supergrade?

i,m thinking about installing a Phat Cat in the neck position of my Burny Supergrade. its a beautiful,80s, MIJ guitar and i love the bridge pup but i find the neck too dark . anyone had good results from a similar swap or anyone selling a Phat Cat neck pup?

You might run into the same problem with the phat cat. With the stock alnico 2 magnets it was pretty dark and sounded muffled to me. Changing one or both magnets can open things up for a PCn, IMO.

I say get it and learn how to change mags, just case it's too dark for you.

+1. Phat CatN's are very dark in my guitars (LP, SG, 335), but a quick & inexpensive mag swap fixes that. Gives you that open single coil sound. I don't like the stock A2's in the neck or bridge, but I probably have more Phat Cats now than just about anybody here, all with replacement magnets.

A Phat Cat is very dark, this won't do the job.

The only way I have found to wake you the neck position of most Les Pauls without making it too boomy on full chords (that's the difficult part) is unpotted boutique pickups like the Antiquities.

Phat Staple of course, too.

I have a Seth Lover N (the Ants stock production counterpart) with an Alnico 5 magnet in the neck. Clearest humbucker so far, not bass boomy like the DiMarzio PAF and the 59N.

i,m not familiar with a Phat Staple-is this quite a new SD pup? is it a P90 style pup?

It's a SD custom shop phat cat but with staples.

I don't have any experience with it but I think I heard that it's a cleaner and louder version of the phat cat. I'm not 100% sure on that so :dot:

For the phat cat? It takes more time than say a C5 but it's just as simple. Search the forum for previous threads on magnet swapping and on the phat cat.

I think it's easier to change magnets in a Phat Cat or P-90. Wymore Guitars.com has replacement PU's; most are $5. If you get an assortment you'll be prepared for any tweaking you'll need to do (free shipping on $50 orders). There's also a 7% discount for forum members. It'll change the way you look at PU's. You're no longer at the mercy of what the manufacturer put in.

An APH1 bridge with A5 put into the neck also gets you A5 sparkle without boom into the neck of a Les Paul, as does a Screamain' Demon.

No, it's nothing like a P90.

A P90 is a construction with passive polepieces and the magnet(s) outside the coils, like PAF-style humbuckers. The Phat Staple has magnet rods like Fender pickups (including real Fender humbuckers).

That changes everything. The passive polepieces are subject to a fight between the magnet(s) and the strings, and that fills out the sound much more. That is the reason why bar-on-bottom pickups like P90s and humbuckers are smoother on overdrive but never reach the bell'n'dang of Fender single coils. The passive polepieces are just slowing down the transmission of the string's activity into the coils, that's my mental model, but it really helps in some things, the same way as you don't use a Hi-Fi cabinet behind your Marshall.
