Phat cat in Les Paul Classic?

I was thinking about putting a phat cat in the neck of my les paul classic. Does anybody know how this would work out? Thanks.

It would work out beautifully if you are after the brighter, more open voice of a single coil pickup. It seems to me that the Phat Cats are a little brighter and clearer than a vintage Gibson P-90. I think that's an improvement as most neck P-90's and Humbuckers sound a little muffled to my ears. My ears are getting pretty worn out tho! Lew

It sounds great. It's glassy and tight. You won't have any "boomy"ness from this pickup but it's still thick.

What bridge humbucker would be nice to go along with the phat cat in the neck.

Re: Phat cat in Les Paul Classic?

It matches up very nicely with my Seth Lover bridge. It would do well with a 59 also.

Ok thanks. I hear good things about the 59b. So these phat cats will get rid of the boomy/bassy neck sound?

Yes - you will notice a big difference in the tightness of the bass.

I personally like the 59n at lot, but I do find it boomy under certain circumstances.

Since the seth lover isnt wax potted do you get bad feedback?

No. That's a fallacy about unpotted humbuckers. Most are not microphonic to the point where it's a serious problem, just as most of the unpotted Gibson paf humbuckers from the 50's are not especially microphonic...tho some are, of course. Lew

I think you are right on. I just put one in my Standard, got it from Stevo actually and it sounds great. It is similar tothe vintage P-90 but not exact, I am wondering what kind of effect the metal cover has as opposedto the p-90's plastic cover?

I've heard you can order them wax potted as custom floor models...

You can, but when I heard my unpotted Seth's next to my friend's potted set, the potted Seth's did give something up. The highs and lows were tighter, but some of the midrange sparkle was lost.

Re: Phat cat in Les Paul Classic?

My unpotted Seth Lover bridge doesn't feed back with lots of overdrive at high volume unless I coax it to.
