Phat Cat roll call

I thought it was time to do an exit poll on the SD Phat Cats. Who's using them in what position of what guitar for what kind of music. If you have the set, how do you like the neck vs. the bridge. If you are using only one, then what else are you using with it?

To get the ball rolling, I'm using a Phat Cat neck with a JD Tele lead in an American Series Telecaster (ash/RW) for blues-based and rock-related music. It's a great combination and hum-canceling when combined. Fat and Phat indeed.

I'm considering a Phat Cat set for an LP Studio or an American Strat (alder/maple), or perhaps another Phat Cat neck with a HB bridge (CC or PG).

well...

the only thing I know is that I'm a bit put off by the way they look. Not a big fan of the chrome covers... if they had black plastic or black chrome, I'd be all over them... perhaps even if they had integral covers, and looked like huge, fat soapbars. (of course that's limitting the adjustability of the pickup... very adjustable pole pieces might compensate, but look silly at the same time.)

Looks shouldn't be too much of an issue but it is. I LOVE P90s, but psychologically I wouldn't want the look of a phat cat on any of my axe. A confidence issue if you will... Looks do matter sometimes... whether we admit it or not. I haven't had the chance to try one, and won't buy one for myself unless they give a few options for the look. Yeah I know it's all really stupid because I do love P90 pickups.

I like the look a lot, but I'm not sure that I would like it paired with a covered HB -- an uncovered one might look better. Anyway, the main point here is the tone and how people like 'em and how they use 'em.

Phat Cat neck in a tele with a QP Tapped bridge. I really like the way it looks in the guitar, don't think I'd use it in an LP but maybe?

I'm using them in this Ibanez JS hardtail.

I totally dig them. They're bright and muscular and wiry and, well, fat- I mean phat.

Also, they have less noise than P-90s under plastic covers. I've used this guitars on more gigs over the last year than any other guitar. And that all started once I dropped in the Cats.

I had those PCs wound to the PRS specs for the PRS I just sold. Now I just have to buy a new guitar to drop them into! haha!

I'm thinking about putting them in a faded SG, I might do it today actually depending on my schedual. It has stock humbuckers in it now and they are nothing special at all.

I am using one in the bridge of my Les Paul Deluxe. Nice for pushing the Bogner Metropolis into overdrive. I've wondered whether one could get an Antiquity Phat Cat.

So, Evan, do you think there would be any problem with pole piece spacing if I put a Phat Cat bridge pickup in a Fender American Series Strat? I measured the spacing of the modern Strat bridge and it appears to be about 3/32" narrower (E-to-E) than a vintage Strat bridge (i.e., about 2 1/32" wide at the bridge pickup).

Randy -- how are things? How would you compare the Phat Cat bridge pickup with the Antiquity HB you previously had in your LP?
