Phat Cat/Single Coil Grounding w/ 3-way Switch

I have a question about wiring a Phat cat p90 along with a single coil using a 3-way switch. So with the phat cat's single braided shield, I know the braided shield is used for grounding and most diagrams I've seen have it soldered to the back of the volume pot. If I'm wanting to wire the phat cat and the single coil to a 3-way switch before the volume pot, what would be the best way to ground it? Can I just solder the shield to the volume pot and the lead to the switch? Or can I remove the shield all together and solder a new ground wire from the pickup to the volume pot?

Thanks.

Yes, either way will work. The braided shield bugs me also. Yes, it shields the signal wire, but it isn't necessary for it to be exposed.
