Phat Cat + What HB In The Bridge?

I've spent a bit of time with my LP today, changing pickup height and fiddling with the tone contols etc.

And I've decided not to throw out both the Phat Cats, I quite like the neck pup but the bridge pup is an entirely different kettle of fish, its sounds really weedy, so its gotta go.

So I got thinking about putting a HB in its place but what?

I'm after something with a bit of umph (nothing too OTT) that will compliment the Phat Cat. Something that can do classic rock and maybe a bit of smooth jazzy.

What do you suggest.

Cheers

Just about anything will work in terms of the overall match-up. That said, the neck PC is fairly strong as neck pu's go so some of the PAF-clones may be the exception. The Pearly Gates, Jazz and a couple of others might be a little thin.

The bridge pu is not the place to get much in the way of smooth jazz tones no matter what you put there -- unless by that you mean kind of fusion-y overdriven lines that usually like a creamier kind of Steve Lukather tone. Maybe the 59 or Alnico 2 Pro if you're wanting to stay vintage-ish.

! the awesome phatcatN/hbB combo:D if you want something smooth 'n' full, i'd say either the a2pro for lower output, or the CC if you want something more compressed and heavy.

Re: Phat Cat + What HB In The Bridge?

Have a 59b sitting on my desk (was gonna put it with a PG before the change of plan), so will give that a whirl try tomorrow.

Looking for a combo that's versatile and not just a one trick pony.

PCn/HBb is probably the most versatile combo imo, especially with a couple push pulls. i've got a similar combo in my SG with phase, coil cut, and series switching and can get anywhere from LP to tele to strat timbres, along with a few unique things like series/OOP.

Re: Phat Cat + What HB In The Bridge?

I was disappointed in bridge Phat Cats, too weak & thin, especially compared to neck Phat Cats, which are dark & powerful. But, with an A8/A4 mag pair, PCB's are totally different. They have strong output & mids, for a full sound. They balance well with the neck too. I believe Wymore Guitars.com ships overseas, why not contact them? If you HB's and/or P-90's, you should have an assortment of spare magnets.

If decide you want a HB in the bridge, PAF types work well, whether A5 or A2 types. I've also got a C8 with a PCN.

Know what you mean about the stock PCb - very weak and thin which surprised me a bit. Wymore do ship overseas as I've had pups off them in the past, so if the 59 doesn't work out I will have a go at this magnet swapping lark you're all raving about!

Blackout Metal :D

On a more serious note, classic rock and some jazz just screams "Seth" to me, though the bridge slot isn´t necessarily the place to look for Jazzy tones... ;)

Jazzy is probably the wrong description, I'm just after something that's smoothish and not too OTT and doesn't sound so weak and weedy next to the PC.

Re: Phat Cat + What HB In The Bridge?

in that case, why don't you take one of the bridge phat cat's a2 magnets and stick it into the '59b? all sorts of smooth with vintage flavors and enough output to keep up with the phat cat.

Interesting thought! I can feel my first magnet swap coming on :)

+1 with that. The other option is Putting in an A5 + a8 mags into the phat cat, and wiring it up with a 4 way switch :)
