i'm currently 'refurbishing' an old sg custom and have a spare '59 bridge humbucker laying around i want to put in it; how would phat cats in the neck/middle go with it ? any recomendations/comments would be appreciated!

I have not used the Phat Cats, but I have used P90s in the necks of SGs and Les Pauls. I love the sound in those positions! They have a nice cut, and lack the mud that plagues so many neck HB pups. I recommend it, especially for rock players.

Go for it!
I use them in a Swamp Ash LP so it's got an already bright and poppy sound, which makes it sound like some kind of MEAN bluesy and smokey tele, but fuller.
You can't go wrong with the Phat Cats. GREAT pickup for all styles. There is magic happening with these. My fav is in the bridge with od for those classic rock tones ala ACDC. Simply amazing.

I have an Epi SG Custom that I put a C5 on the bridge, a Phat Cat in the Middle, and a '59N at the neck. Pretty good combination. If I do another HHH guitar, I'll put a Phat Cat in both the neck & middle.
P-90's in a HB size are a great idea. The twin magnets let you pair up dozens of magnet combinations and really get the tone you want. Phat Cats use twin A2's, which are mid-heavy, and can be pretty dark in the neck position of mahogany bodies. I like to swap one A2 for an A5 to give it some sparkle & life.
In a couple of my 2 HB guitars, I've put in a neck Phat Cat (A5/A2) with a HB on the bridge, and because it's a single coil, it gives a clearer tone than a HB, and avoids the potential for muddiness.
If you're feelling creative, you can improve on the stock Gibson wiring, and with a couple of push-pulls, add coil cuts and phase. I have a wiring system I developed for my SG Custom, that I'll give you the details on if you're interested. Some guys here use a push-pull as a shut-off for the middle PU, to get it in & out of action faster.

I just re-did a flame maple SG Deluxe. I have a 490T (A4) in the bridge & a Phat CatN. I put an A5/A4 in the PCN, and it has a great tone, with bite...from a neck PU! Due to the wood (it's on the heavy side) it's not as bright as another SG which also has a PCN, but with a A5/A3. This is one of my best sounding guitars.
