I recently scored a Tokai Les Paul from a neighbor of mine and I want to change the pick-ups into something with grit and yet have a vintage vibe. I happen to have first-hand experience with Pearly Gates with my neighbor's "Lucille" and I loved them! However, the cleans were a little bit of a letdown. I noticed that the Phat Cats' tonechart seemed quite similar to the Pearly Gates, both with Alnico 2's no less.

For those who have heard both, how did they differ in both overdriven and clean sound?

The Phat Cats have more sparkle and a thinner low end than the PG's. If it's your only Lester, I'd get the PG set.

In my case, I'm trying to get another LP or Hamer to put Phat Cats in it to go along with my PG loaded LP Standard.

They're both great tones, it just depends on whether you want a single coil personality or a PAF voice from the LP.

I went with the Phat cats becasue their tone is solid IMO and I just cant stand the PGB! The Pearly gates neck is good though!
