Phat Cats?

I'm thinking about going P-90 in the neck of my favorite strat for a little bit of variety. I have some spare time today, so I'm headed to Guitar Center this afternoon. Does anyone have any thoughts on the Phat Cat pups? I haven't tried them, but since I'm GAS'ing for some P-90 tone, maybe I'll just go for it. This will be the neck pickup in my strat that has a JB in the bridge. Any ideas much appreciated!! :)

Re: Phat Cats?

I've also wondered how the Phat Cats would perform under hard rock/metal musical styles ? MrHM :smokin:

Re: Phat Cats?

Phat Cats are great! I love the set I have in my Sheraton. They have a ton of clarity and about the same output as a PAF class humbucker. If you want a thicker, punchier tone than regular singles (like in a strat) but don't want to give up any detail and clarity, the Phat Cat is sure hard to beat.

The only downside is that they aren't as quiet as a 'bucker.

Re: Phat Cats?

It's a real live P-90 in a humbucker cover. The closest thing to them in the SD samples I think are the Vintage P-90 set.

Re: Phat Cats?

Aren't the Phat Cats stacked and mostly hum cancelling ?

Re: Phat Cats?

The PC's are true singles, but the metal cover should (theoretically) make them a bit quieter than a regular single.

I really liked the sound of P-90s in a Gibson Les Paul Jr. That's why I thought that I might like them in my Strat...I like hot, single coil tones. Will these do that and match up with my JB?

Definately. I was actually thinking of pairing a PC at the neck with a Custom at the bridge of my Hamer Studio.

Re: Phat Cats?

It's weird, I've heard excellent things about Phat Cats on these boards, and then I go to the HC boards and people told me they sounded boring and dull compared to P94s. Having played with P94s and having heard clips of Phat Cats, I would expect to do better with a P94 in the bridge and a Phat Cat in the neck. Anyone do a side by side comparison?

Re: Phat Cats?

I have a Phat Cat in the neck slot of a Tele, and it sounds great -- fat with high end cut and no muddiness. It has plenty of output -- the Jerry Donahue at the bridge just keeps up with it. The SD folks recommended pairing the Phat Cat neck with a Custom Custom bridge in a Strat I was thinking about working up, so I would think the JB would work OK. Let us know how it goes!

The phat cat sounds great in the neck from the clips people have posted since this thread was made. But I don't think the bridge would do well for hard rock... and the opposite is true for P94s in my experience, I like the bridge position but the neck just doesn't do it, it's great for grunge but I don't play that stuff with the neck position. That's why I keep thinking of pairing a phat cat neck with a P94 bridge...

Re: Phat Cats?

I presently have a phat cat neck and alnico pro II bridge in that blue tele in my avatar. The body is warmoth hollow mahogany and the neck is maple w/ebony board.

The combo sounds good, the phat cat has thicker mids than the A2 Pro, but the combo is very versatile and sounds great. Can definitely do blues and classic rock. I may throw a JB or my airzone back in the bridge to get more low mids, but for now it is fine.
