phat Staple with a fender-type Bridge?

So, I'm thinking about putting together a guitar, based around a set of phat staple pickups that I bought last summer. Now, I've heard that it doesn't really make that much of a difference with humbuckers whether they're f-spaced or Gibson spaced, but would that hold true for Phat Staples as well?

i'd be more worried about the pickup being deeper than the body is thick, re fitting one in a fendery guitar

It should be okay. Warmoth does their routes at 1.25 " and the phat staples are at 1.20", so I should juuust make it with 0.05" to spare.

The route depth should be OK for a full thickness Fender. Whether it already is deep enough or not is a different question.

Things that are out are SGs, possibly Hamer Sunbursts, possibly Eclipses and the like.

when i measured mine it was taller than 1.2"... btw i mean the pickup being taller than the body is thick, not taller than the route is deep

Keep in mind the reason why these things fit in the bridge of LPs (and sometimes SGs) is that there is the high tune-o-matic that you reach up to.

Any kind of flatmount bridge or recessed TOM will require more wood carving.

Well I called, but they'd already sent the body. Guess I'll find out when I get here if they fit, and if not, decide whether to route deeper or sell the staples.

Tested it last night, and they definitely don't fit. It's just the staples that extend below the pickup. There are deeper routs for the pickup arm-side-connector thingies and screws, but the staples are no-go.

Re: phat Staple with a fender-type Bridge?

yes. you would have to make the whole rout as deep as the smaller deeper routs for the pup legs

Remember with a 5/8" - 7/8" forstner bit you can drill down 3 holes that will each accomodate 2 of the magnet/adjuster assemblies. Depending on the size of the bit they will overlap. For a trem bridge you might find yourself going through to the trem cavity, which structurally is fine, just could be a bit of a shocker if you weren't ready for it. I'm a luthier with routers and all kinds of tools and I would use the forstner bit because it's easy and it makes very localized holes for the pole pieces rather than a long slot. For the DIY'er without the tools, a $5-$20 bit in a hand drill can save the day.
