Pick suggestions please

I've been using a red Jazz III which is pretty thick. Pros and cons though. I like the tone it gives me. When I pluck a string I get a real solid and pronounced tone. But the pick doesn't flex at all. I like the pick to flex some. If I use a thinner pick it flexes which I like but I don't get the same tone as I do with my Jazz III.

Does anyone know of a pick that will give me some flexation yet hit the string with solidity and give a confident tone?

Re: Pick suggestions please

I like the jazz 3s for accuracy and speed due to that sharp tip, but that lack.of flexibility does get to me. Ill never give up on dunlop nylon mediums, and if they come in a mandolin pick its the best of.both worlds. Mandolin picks are practically the same shape as jazz3s only they are normal pic plastic.

Re: Pick suggestions please

The best advice is to go buy a bunch of different picks, in all different thicknesses and play with them. Ive always used dunlop tortes picks and when I first started I used really stiff ones (1.0mm and 1.14mm); and over the course of about 5 or 6 years I've gotten down to medium-thin ones (.60). Just get a bunch of different ones and experiment with each

My favorite right now are Dunlop Ultex sharps. They are like a cross between a jazz and regular style pick. If you get .73 picks they should have some flex to them. I also like Tortex sharps which have an even sharper tip if the thinner Ultex don't have the attack you want maybe the Tortex sharps will give it to you.

Re: Pick suggestions please

Put the plectrum down for a while. Try fingers and thumb. You may be pleasantly surprised.

Re: Pick suggestions please

Planet wave black ice are a nice middle ground. A bit more flex but with plenty of chunk and attack.

They are a bit smaller than jazz IIIs though

Picks are cheap. Find several to score and keep on playing. One will certainly rise to the top of the heap.

I've spent $300 on guitar picks a few years ago and I've found the type of pick(s) I like most and I haven't looked back (much).

Re: Pick suggestions please

I second you try out some Ultex sharps from dunlop. I've used all of their gauges and liked them but my technique has made me move from them to a John Petrucci Jazz 3 and now I currently use a Ultex Jazz 3.

Re: Pick suggestions please

i have had good experiences with planet waves black ice and ultex sharp. These give me really nice attack and flex enough for dynamics.

Re: Pick suggestions please

when i m in need for that bit of flex and that boldness of the fundamental i go for;

  • nylon standard .88 or 1mm
  • tortex .88 of any shape (standard, TIII, Jazz III) to me tortex .88 is the best of both worlds (where the bit of flex gets me that openness and that definite bold attack of the note)
  • gator grip .96 again best of of both but it is bit bottom heavy to me
  • fender california clear medium. bit of that hi-fi sounding pick, but i dont find it sterile at all, in fact i love it for acoustic playing. dont try the heavy ones.

Re: Pick suggestions please

Try a jazz I they are stiff enough that you can still blaze on them but flexible enough to play funk riffs as well. I think the jazz III is only good for single note playing.

Re: Pick suggestions please

I like the ibanez sand paper grip. Almost the same shape, available in a medium. The Paul Gilbert model is similar also, easier to grip than the Dunlop, but not very flexible.

Re: Pick suggestions please

I'll use the Dunlop Ultex, Ultex Sharp, Gator, and Tortex picks interchangeably--1.14 mm.

I like the V-Picks I have, but there is no flex in these at all.

Another one I like is the new Graph-Tech picks. I use the heaviest gauge.
