Pick-ups For An SG????

What are you SG players using????

I was thinking of the '59n/C5b I already have, but thought I'd ask anyway! :)

Re: Pick-ups For An SG????

I don't have an SG, but the PG set in my Lester rocks. Since an SG is lighter and thinner than a Paul, Maybe something fatter in the bridge would work, like a PG at the neck and a CC at the bridge. You have a diffrent flavor of this setup, the 59/C5. Get a pair of Alnico II mags, and you can get a CC at the bridge and an approximation ( a nice one :) ) of the Pg at the neck.

Re: Pick-ups For An SG????

I like Invaders in the bridge of an SG. Pair that with something mellow in front, like a '59 or Phat Cat, and you'll have a really wide tone spectrum to work with.

Re: Pick-ups For An SG????

All depends on your taste. I have tried everything (and I ain't kidding). :smack:

Pickups that worked for me:

(bridge)
Rio Grande BBQ
Duncan JB
DiMarzio Air Zone
DiMarzio Breed

(neck)
stock Gibson
Duncan Pearly Gates
Duncan '59
Duncan Jazz
Rio Grande Genuine Texas (the best match for the BBQ)

Pickups that didn't:

(bridge)
Duncan C5
Duncan Custom
Duncan Custom Custom
DiMarzio Tone Zone

These are only for an SG and for the way I play now, which is 40% clean (funky, reggae), 30% slightly overdriven (Keith Richards, Black Crowes), and 30% more overdriven (Marshally, Hendrixy, AC/DC-ish ; more "rock" for soloing) through a mostly clean (slightly gritty) tube Fender amp. Other guitars amps and styles will undoubtably be different. I like a LOT of mids. That may not be your taste.

In the past I've used many other pickups in other guitars through different amps for other styles.... It really all depends on what you like.

Re: Pick-ups For An SG????

Thanks guys....

Mac-P, I've got a Strat w/ PGn & PGb, an LP w/ P90 Custom 3s, & a Tele w/a Fralin Vintage Hot in the middle......just looking for something that can handle most classic rock, but with a little "different" take on things.

As for amps, I've got a Hiwatt Custom 50(EL34), a Laney VC-30(EL84), & a Tech21 Trademark 60 that covers a lot of bases...also have a SansAmp PSA-1 that handles a lot of different settings.

Re: Pick-ups For An SG????

I've got a Custom in the bridge of my Epiphone SG. I don't really use the neck pickup so I never replaced it yet.

Re: Pick-ups For An SG????

Duncan Antiquity humbuckers in a '66 Standard. And to think that some people don't believe in magic!...

jguttello,

You don't find the '59 to be too trebly for the BBQ?

Re: Pick-ups For An SG????

I have a '68 standard. It has original PUPS in it. I would really not even consider changing them. But questioning the type of PUP has a lot to do with what type of music you are planning to play with this guitar, more so than what guitar the PUP will go in. If you are looking for more of a classic Rock type of sound, I would look at Antiquities, Seth Lovers, or Pearly gates. IMO for this type of sound Antiquities all the way...... Great PUP. :) :)

Re: Pick-ups For An SG????

I am using a Dimarzio PAF PRO neck and a Dimarzio breed in the bridge in my SG the breed is very thick and actually cuts through very well, the mids sound very aggressive and punchy so your solos sound really big with single notes. The pafpro gets a pretty smooth neck sound almost like a tubular sound quite nice really transparent and slightly bright. The only problem though is that I dont really like the playability and inonation of that guitar so I dont play it as much as my PRS one with duncans (custom) which dosent sound as big but cuts through the mix alot more live.

Re: Pick-ups For An SG????

hey SG fellaz!

I've got one of those faded SGs with the ebony board so the sound might be a tad different from yours.

Currently I've swapped the stock Gibbos for SD Jazz and Custom5 but I'm feeling that they're to trebbly for my taste.

As I have a split option for both and really like the sound options I#ve decided to get a JimmyPage wiring(21options or somfn).

Now I need an advise for new pups...

Thought about the Rio Texas/BBQ set but I've heard the BBQ might be just a bit too bassy. So now I've thought about PRS pups which should be able to handle the different sound options pretty well...

What do you guys think about a Rio Texas/Dragon2 set?!

Re: Pick-ups For An SG????

I have a Demon in the bridge of my SG X with a rosewood fretboard that sounds like it was made for it. Its big, full and open with bite. And palm muting gives me unholy chug. I have the same pup in the bridge of my Gothic SG mated with a '59 neck, but this guitar has an ebony fretboard. The '59 sounds great, fat and vintage in a Sabbath vein. The Demon however sounds real thin compared to my other Demon loaded SG X.

If your SG has a rosewood fretboard then I think any duncan pup will sound great. If its an Ebony board you might have limited options.

Re: Pick-ups For An SG????

I was using a Phat Cat in the Bridge of my SG because I wanted an SG Junior type of tone. The Phat Cat turned out not to be that P-90ish and a little thin for the SG. I'm getting a real Les Paul Junior next week and i'm not sure what to do with the SG. Maybe buy an antiquity bridge? I don't have a humbucker guitar right now and this would probably work.

it does have an ebony board. and that's why most of the duncans won't sound too good in that particular guitar. so any opinions?

Rio Texas/Dragon II?!

I'll second that. Steve's SG sounds unbelievable with the Ants in it. I'm using Seth's in my '61 reissue and they sound great, but Steve's defintiely sounds better, it's partially due to the pups but also the aged wood in the '66.

The faded SG specials definately have mahogany necks w/rosewood fingerboards. So barring any really strange one-offs, that is what you have. That being said, I would recommend staying away from the Dragon II. IMO it is too bassy and maybe a little too hot to match up with the texas. Maybe not too hot but I experienced some serious over powering bottom end in mine (when I still had it ;)) anywayz, I was not impressed with it. If that fingerboard is in fact ebony you will probably have a whale of a time making anything sound GREAT.
