Pick-ups for jaguar HH

Hi,

I would like to replace the humbuckers in my jaguar HH classic player.

I would like to replace them to have;
- equal volume between humbucker and single coil mode
- more bite / brightness to the humbuckers

What would you recommend?

Re: Pick-ups for jaguar HH

You’ll need mismatched coil humbuckers like the 59/Custom and split to the stronger coil.

Re: Pick-ups for jaguar HH

My Super Distortion is the same volume split. Brighter and cleaner but not really quieter. Which actually disappointed me - I was hoping for a volume drop in split mode!

Re: Pick-ups for jaguar HH

Except for actives, there isn't any pickup that truly has even volume between a full split and 2 coils in series. Though some, the EQ and preamp compression may make it close enough to not matter.

Still, a mismatched coil pickup like a 59/Custom or P-Rails is going to come closer, on the hot coil [Custom coil in '59/C, P-90 in P-Rail].

P-Rails tend to be polarizing, some people love the variety of sounds, and don't mind the radical volume changes from mode to mode -- especially series vs rail single mode. Others can't get the volume changes to work with how they want to use them, and are happier with all humbucker or all single coil guitars. If you like P-90s, and ridiculously fat but still with complex harmonics pickups (somewhat like a Tone Zone), with a bright airy sort of PAFish parallel mode, and don't mind complex switching arrangements (either a pair of Triple Shot pickup rings, or a bunch of push/pull knobs), they are very hard to beat for versatility, and have a number of great sounds... If they are the sounds you are looking for.

'59/Custom is very close to what you asked for. Bright and airy but complex series tone, with a strong single coil sound. Pair it with a Sentient in the neck, probably.

Re: Pick-ups for jaguar HH

Are you looking for something in the classic vintage Gibson humbucker vein? Something '70's aftermarket sounding? Something more modern?

There are lots of choices that can come close to meeting those criteria, but we would need to know how much general output you are looking for in order to suggest them.

Re: Pick-ups for jaguar HH

DIMARZIO SUPER DISTORTION PUTS OUT SAME VOLUME SPLIT! Sorry, didn't mean to yell but felt totally overlooked. [See post 4, above].
The single coil actually gets louder when split (tap testing), and the net result is brighter, thinner, but the same overall volume as both coils.
Now, whether or not the SD has more bite/brightness than whatever the HH Jag comes with I have no idea...but I can say some pickups DO give the same volume split. A partial split is a good suggestion as well.

I am guessing a '59/Custom hybrid for this application. With the Jaguar's short scale articulation will be important and something like the Super D will probably turn to mush.

Thanks for the input so far.
I’m looking for a generally grungy kind of tone. Think of bands like the pixies, smashing pumpkins, incubus, ..

Also, it’s not really a split as the jaguar allows you to blend between humbucker and single coil so..

Most of those bands get more of their tone from fuzz & OD into amp than the guitar.

Big Muff Pi into low gain OD/boost (or boost->fuzz->OD for a more Gilmourish config) can do a ridiculous range of smooth to overamped tones for a range of Smashing Pumpkins songs.

But Incubus is often more about the amp: Dual Recto, Vox AC/30, modded Plexi and/or JCM800.

The Jaguar HH typically has Enforcer pickups, which are a lot like an Invader. Probably too hot and thick for what you want.

Assuming you have the right dirt/amp for the job, '59/Custom and Sentient ought to be better. Still good for high gain, but brighter and more flexible.

Re: Pick-ups for jaguar HH

The description is a perfect case where an active set is probably going to work best. The volume thing is the big issue. I haven't heard a single case where a split humbucker was the same exact volume as it on full. You might be able to get there with a Pickup Booster pedal, though.
