pick-ups that would suit me.

I know absolutely nothing when it comes to guitar pick-ups, but am desperate to get my guitar sounding as perfect as it can be as I'm going to be recording soon. As my knowledge is very little I'm just going to list everything that I think may be of importance (most of it probably isnt) in the hope someone will be able to list the ideal pick-ups for me.

I use:
an epiphone les paul standard
around 100w marshall amp
a podxt amp modeler
light dunlop picks with regular dean markley blue steel strings
I play all kinds of modern rock music but mainly Nirvana, Foo Fighters, Weezer.

Thanks for the help.

Re: pick-ups that would suit me.

I think a PG/Custom set would cover all of those sounds quite well.

I play some Foo Fighter and STP covers in my band and the PG set in my LP is all over those sounds as well.

Re: pick-ups that would suit me.

I'll list some of the pups below for bridge and neck that either folks here have recommended or that I have used for those types of music.

Bridge
JB
Custom
There are other options. But I think that either of those two represent a good "base" to start from. You can then find what you like as you go and try the other myriad of pups that Duncan offers. None are bad really!

Neck
Pearly Gates
AII Pro
59
Again, any of those are good starting points for you, and then you can try to see what you really like.

Honestlty you can't go wrong with a custom/59, or a jb/59 combo. JB will be a bit hotter (more output), and better harmonics, the custom will have a better bottom end, more mids, and really sound like a supped up version of the classic 59.

Hope that helps and doesn't confuse you even more!

Cobain used a dimarzio superdistortion. Guys, a custom would be the closest thing to that right?

Re: pick-ups that would suit me.

I always thought Cobain used a JB. I 'm not sure, but the Custom is a friendlier pickup than the JB. I feel it covers more sounds.

Oh, and welcome to the forum, Stacked!

Re: pick-ups that would suit me.

I'd probably suggest the JB in the bridge for what you're looking for. It will really give you a thick meaty tone in that Epi. The one thing I regret about selling my Epi LP was that I didn't try a different set of pups in it. My Epi was a bright guitar, and the C5/59' combo wasn't right in it. If you're Epi is on the bright side, the Custom may be too over the top on the high end.

For the neck....depends on what you want to use it for. My favorite neck pup is the APH II. Slash tones galore from this pup. Smooth, creamy, and well balanced.

Re: pick-ups that would suit me.

Thanks everyone, I'll start to look into those pickups mentioned, does anyone know the kind of price I should be expecting to spend on them too? thanks.

oh and also, Although Kurt was no fan of Les Pauls I am, but I'd love to be able to recreate that Cobain sound using my guitar. I know he used a DiMarzio Super Distortion humbucker in the bridge position and a DiMarzio PAF in the neck position, however the bridge was later replaced by a JB on many of his guitars.

I've decided on a JB through the recommendations here and some guy I went to see in a guitar shop who seemed experienced. As for the neck pick-up though, Im still not sure on what to go with which would go well with the JB.
thanks again.

For the neck a jazz works wonderfully with the jb. You are looking at spending $120 to $150 for the pickups.
