Picked up a G-Major

I traded in my Rocktron Intelleffect Online plus $200 and got a T.C. Electronics G-Major. I liked the Intelleffect alot but it was redundant with the Intellipitch that I still have and the G-Major has a few things that the Rocktron stuff doesn't have.

Pretty cool unit, we'll see how bad it is to program. Sounds great though and it's nice to have a few new effects in my rig.

It's been too long, I had to go shopping........

Re: Picked up a G-Major

cool, my guitar teacher has one i think. i havent heard it though.

are there gonna be any more failed grace tunes soon? i liked the other ones :)

Re: Picked up a G-Major

nice score Robert ... those are major league units .. bet you'll have it tweeked to perfection in no time ... enjoy

cheers

Re: Picked up a G-Major

Those have pretty much become the new industry standard guitar FX processor.
It makes me wonder why anyone would pay nearly $800 more for a G-Force?
The G-Major gives you just about as much for a very reasonable amount of money.

By the looks the only thing really is a harmonizer the the G Force has..Dunno if thats worth it unless an equally as good harmonizer can be had for a good bit less..

Re: Picked up a G-Major

nice score!

got a question though:

is all that racxk stuff really worth it? i understand maybe a pre amp and a power amp but is all the effects and stuff really worth it?

Re: Picked up a G-Major

If you have a pre/power amp or head with FX loop, it's pretty easy to setup a small rack and Midi Floorboard. It's debateable about whether its better or worse than a pedalboard full of pedals, but you definitely have a lot of flexibility and control over your settings. I like the fact that the G Major is tailored to guitar rigs, whereas many multi FX units sound great in studio setups but sound feeble for guitar.

Re: Picked up a G-Major

we want a review........are the reverbs any good???I was thinking too of exchanging my rocktron replifex with one of them....

Re: Picked up a G-Major

It's a bit early for anything more than a simple review, I'll know more in a couple of days. Yesterday I scrolled through the presets and I liked what I heard. The reverbs do sound very good as do the rest of the effects. It's nice to have phasers and flangers again and the filter and modulation effects are are pretty cool as well. I also like the fact that it has a gate and a compressor as well. My compression and gating used to get done by a DBX 166 XL but I removed that from my rack a couple of months ago. Now I can gate my high gain patches and compress my clean patches without having to do it globally. I didn't like having to gate my cleans and compress my distortions the way I used to have to.

The built in tuner is cool, but I already have a Korg rack tuner with a much larger display so it isn't nessessary in my rig but for someone looking for a one rack space, does almost everything effects processor the G-Major seems to be the way to go.

I believe the G-Force also has distortion patches, I'm not sure about the harmonizer.

The Rocktron stuff is a bit different, not nearly as many effects but the Rocktron stuff still has its upside. The Intellipitch (that I kept) has a 3 voice harmonizer that tracks like theres no tomorrow so I like that unit alot. They have been out of production for almost four years and they are getting harder to find used. The Intellipitch also has a 4 voice detune compared to the G-Majors 2 voice and the Rocktron stuff also has an 8 voice pannable chorus which is the lushest chorus I have ever heard. Also the G-major only shifts one octave down and the Intellipitch drops 2 octaves with another voice or two that can also be set to one octave down and one octave up simutaniously, which makes huge sounding octave work. The Rocktron stuff also appears to be easier to program, but that is probably a combination of the G-Major having more stuff on it as well as the fact that I'm just not familiar with it yet.

I've been playing with another originals project that has been getting some label interest and the Failed Grace thing got put on "slow mode" for a minute but I have another 6-8 songs that I'm getting ready to start laying tracks for. Yes, there will be new tunes coming up shortly.

I used to be a big pedal kind of guy but I got tired of all the clutter on stage. I'm to the point now that all I have on the floor is one midi cable and a midi controller. I run my controller so that I can send both program changes as well as controller changes. Since the Triaxis is midi switchable I can change my amp settings as well as patch changes with a single button and then I can switch in and out up to 5 individual effects at the touch of 5 individual buttons. Trying to switch that much stuff with pedals and amp switches while singing is nearly impossible, I do it all with a single button, often without looking at the floor. It can be done with pedals and there are pros and cons to both set-ups but for me, midi is the only way to go.

So far, the G-Major seems to have solved a couple of issues for me and it sounds great. Now if I can just get it programmed to my rig I'll be happy. I should have it worked out today.

Robert, that's a very nice unit from all I've read and heard. Please keep us informed. :)

Re: Picked up a G-Major

that kind of stuff always seem to hard to figure out.... is it pretty easy to use Robert? is there a 1000 page manuel

Re: Picked up a G-Major

The manual is pamphlet sized and under 50 pages. It didn't take but a couple of minutes to figure out the midi mapping and I have a good grasp on setting and storing program changes now as well.

Controller assignment doesn't look too hard either so I'm just about there with this unit. I would have appriciated some flow charts on the parameter values and the manual could actually be a little biggr and written a little better but it's understandable. The print could be a little bigger and a little more content would have been nice but it's ok. There is alot of info crammed into a small space and it gets a little hard to dig the important things out.

If this was my first dance with midi I might have been a bit confused and this manual appears to assume that the reader has experience with midi. If you have midi experience it's pretty easy but this might be a hard manual/unit to cut your teeth on. A glossary and some intermediate explanations would be nice for a person new to midi.

But so far so good and the tone of the unit (little extra color/good effects/low noise) makes it one of the better guitar processors I've used.

Re: Picked up a G-Major

I've been thinking of getting one of those to use in the mixable FX loop of my Bogner, while also using some of my favorite stomp boxes on the floor. The idea would be to rid myself of the Line 6 green & blue in leiu of a G-Major.

The only problem is that it'll make gigging setups a little more of a hassle, but I'm still considering it. Especially since the Bogner has a midi matrix cable, which will allow a midi switcher to change my channels, just like the Triaxis. Hmmmm. Still debating the idea.

Re: Picked up a G-Major

The G-Major also has some sort of dual relay design and you can switch your amp by saving the relay info into the presets.

GJ, I'd at least look into it, you may lose the pedals completely. The chorus, phase and flange are as good as any pedal I've found, the delays and verbs are even better. The deeper I get into this unit, the more I am impressed.

And I am not generally easy to impress.

Re: Picked up a G-Major

With my rig it probably sounds even better than the website.

Yes you can use any combination of the 6 effects that you like (7 if you count the gate.) There are 3 basic algorythms, series, semi-parallel and parallel and you can use one or a combination of any of the effects.

The G-Major is actually very plug and play friendly and the factory presets are extremely useable compared to some units that have factory presets that are very "out there" and not very well suited to real life application.

Midi (musicial instrument digital interface) is not music or sound but instead a common "language" that allows different units to "communicate" with each other. The basics of midi are pretty simple and guitar rig application of midi is often bare bones and very straight forward. It's really no more than assigning a button a number, a program the same number and then when you hit that button the correct program is called up. Controller funtions (assigning a button to a single effect) is just as simple. Once you learn the terminology it's a breeze.

Re: Picked up a G-Major

That was a BAD thread Mr. Robert........now i want to sell my replifex for a g-major............

Re: Picked up a G-Major

good choice robert,

i also use the g-major
one great point about it is that it does all my channel switching as well! ie. no need for an amp switcher or more footswitches
wat i mean is, i have the Gmajor in the FX loop of my Mesa Boogie Mark III head and the Gmajor allows me to switch between the clean cruch and high gain channels on the amp

wat midi controller do u use?
i use an ART X-15 controller - with 2 built in expression pedals (for vol and whammy or whatever!!) and 10 buttons that can do either program changes or effect on/off changes

one thing u must try - play with the reverb and chorus settings together (especially using the 'golden ratio') u can get your guitar to be the epitomie of LUSH! :D

also, what version is your Gmajor - there has recently been a software update - that is GREAT

also, dont kno if u kno this, but double click the noise gate function to access the pretty damn nice parametric eq - u can have soo much fun just playing with that!!

have fun, and keep playing around!
