Picked up an Epiphone G400

I saw a epiphone G400 on facebook w/ hardcase for $100, so I couldn't resist.

It's not bad! The guitar feels solid, has a couple of dings in it. Neck is straight, no fret buzz, super low action. I think the Pickups are stock. They sound a lot like the 498T & 490R. I'm not sure of the age. It has the small pickguard, cherry color, grover tuners.

I forgot to take pics, and now I'm at work. Anyway, I thought it was a good deal!

I still have one that has a 498t in the bridge and a Duncan 59n in the neck. It sounds as good as my Gibson SG Standard.

Great deal, even without the hard case.

I've got a few G-400's, a lot of guitar for the money. For me, the stock PU's have always been uninspiring, whether Alnico Classic Pros or the older models. What's worked well for me in G-400's are a pair of Duncan '59's, a Custom 8 and a '59N, and a pair of Rio Grande BBQ's.

Im in the process of "ungothing" a goth sg400. I put a 498t with an a8 in the bridge, gonna order a full guard for it from greasy groove when its done. Good guitars, especially for the $. Great deal!

It's on good shape. Feels good for sure. I was thinking about putting more vintage style pups in it (such as a set of 59's) and leaving it in standard tuning or half step down.

All of my other guitars have hot pups and are detuned to some extent.

Very nice! 59's or maybe a set of Pearlys. Or maybe even Seths. Or Custom/Jazz, Custom5/Jazz.

So. Much. Win!

I have never owned one, but I have played a crap ton in pawn shops and GC etc.

Those may be Epi's number one win after their Semi Hollows. And the love dudes on here give them? You sir, did good!

Re: Picked up an Epiphone G400

I never much cared for the looks of an SG. I bought a black EPI G400 once so I could have the trifecta as I have a black Explorer and at that time, had a black LP. I was very pleasantly suprised by how much I liked it. Id like to have another one day. Played great, sounded great, (espec after pup swap. c5/59 IIRC)and since it was light, it didnt kill my bad back.

My first favorite guitar was SG, back when Clapton was playing one with Cream. Sleek, sexy, modern, and the longest neck around. Decades later, they still look great to me.

Re: Picked up an Epiphone G400

The G-400 pickups are actually not too bad if you take the covers off and scrape about 5 pounds of wax off the top of them. They sound much more open and present after being uncovered, de-waxed, and having their pole pieces lowered a bit. I used to buy sets of them for 10 dollars used on Ebay and install them in student guitars when their guitars had really cheap low end pickups in them. It was always a vast improvement. The G-400 set are not Seymour Duncans, but I can play them for a long time and not find them annoying at all, which I can't say of most pickups that come in lower end guitars.

** This is all assuming that they are the same pickups they had in the G-400 several years ago...

Epi's putting Alnico Classic Pros in their set neck SG's, which are better than their old mudbucker PU's, but still leave something to be desired. Unfortunately they haven't gotten the Probucker upgrade yet.

Thanks for all the replies
everyone. It's nice to be reassured I got a good deal.

Can the year be determined from the serial #?

Cool. Thanks! I wonder if this has the better pups or the 'mudbuckers' - my initial impression was that they sound decent.

The Epi PU upgrade program started in 2012 (I think), so yours was made before that. Put in better PU's and you'll hear a difference.

Re: Picked up an Epiphone G400

Yeah, mine was a 2007 or 2008. I put in a C5 and someth else in the neck and it was night and day diff. Made a "not bad" guitar into a " hey this is awesome" guitar
