Pickguard Alternatives For A LP.......

As most of you know I just purchased a Gibson Les Paul Standard a while back. It came with a pickguard but I really don't want to install a pickguard 1) because I don't like the look of them and 2) I don't wanna have a hole drilled into the guitar to mount it. But on the other hand, I wanna protect my guitar from scratches. I have considered a plastic coating like what is used on computer type LCD screens but have heard that its not a good idea. I checked with a music store I went to the other day and they said there was a company that used to make plastic coatings for guitars like I want but they aren't around anymore. Do I have any other options? Anyone have any info on this? Thanks in advance.

You want to plastic coat your Les Paul Standard? :smack: Is this what you really want to do? If so, just strip it and put a thick coat of poly on there.

big back has the right idea. it is a guitar that was ment to be played. just be a litle careful with it and nothing too bad will happen. little pick scratches are usual as are worn (only slightly) frets on a guitar thta has been played. keep it in the case when you aren't playing and it will stay nearly flawless for a long time.

Those fine pick scrathes can be buffed out no problem. One of the advantages to nitro is that minor damage to the finish can be easily nad cheaply repaired. If you coat the guitar you will be robbing it of tone. Just play it and be careful.

Thanks alot for your posts guys. I would install the pickguard before I'd EVER consider adding more poly to its finish. I think I'll stick without a pickguard, be careful and see how it goes. Worst case scenario is that I install the pickguard. Thanks again. :)

I don't have pickguards on my Les Pauls and none of them are scratched up. What are you using for a pick, a screw driver or something?

I beat the living hell out of my strings. repeat ---> strings. I don't hit the body with the pick.
