Picking a P-90 Guitar

Re: Picking a P-90 Guitar

If you haven't looked at Reverend guitars, I strongly recommend you do, best value for money at their price point - their P90s are really good. From the same stable, Railhammer pickups do some really good P90-type HB-sized replacements.

They need to do that in a Jaguar...

They mostly have.

I love Mustangs, have trouble recommending them with the standard vibrato. (I actually like the Mustang vibrato but the new ones are often made without knife edges on the trem plate (!) and they're a pain to get working, or find someone who can do it for you.) BUT this just looks so nice...

To be honest, even though I enjoy P90s I prefer my Fender guitars to come with Fender pickups; the Toronado is oddball, so it works. It's also Gibson scale. In the end I don't know if I'd recommend any of the above to anyone specifically as "P90 guitars," but I do just think they're cool :)

Re: Picking a P-90 Guitar

These are some great suggestions! As to the p90 / HB combo, what do you guys know about G&L Tribute series?

They have one called Irish Ale http://www.guitarcenter.com/GL/Tribute-ASAT-Junior-II-Electric-Guitar-Irish-Ale-1375800275304.gc

And one called the Fallout which is a p90 neck with a bridge HB. http://www.guitarcenter.com/GL/Tribute-Fallout-Electric-Guitar-Fullerton-Red-1375800275276.gc

I don't have any experience with G&L guitars.

I did play a Wildkat at Guitar Center today and it felt pretty good. Another point I forgot to mention: I'm trying to keep the guitar at under 8lbs. I love my Les Paul Studio with the Chambered body I think it's like 6.5-7lbs. I could go a little more for something like the ES-339 Pro P90.

Thanks again for all the suggestions!

It's a great idea, I've done that to a couple HH guitars, using a GFS Mean 90 or a Phat Cat with brighter magnets. You get more clarity and high end from a P-90 in the neck (being a single coil and all). A HB in the bridge has more warmth and mids than a P-90.

Epi SG G400. Soapbar. Duncan P90 customs. Needs a little route and a pickguard but it is worth the trouble and you can get the guitar for between 2 and 3 hundred. The pickups and guitar could just fit in your $500 target.View attachment 74736

Do you know if that is a specific model or just g-400 p90?

After playing a few guitars and testing their weight, I've decided that something like that SG would be great. I would like something that has dual p-90s or mini-hums, under 8lbs and around $500. I have been thinking of saving a little more to get the 2016 Gibson SG Special T with mini-hums. I can get that for around 550 used or $739 new.

Re: Picking a P-90 Guitar

I'm in the market for a new guitar here in the next couple of months and I want to go p90. I've looked at Phat Cats and PRails but I'm thinking a proper P90 would be better. I have some questions about pickup changing. I'm angling for something to play things like Queens of the Stone Age and other fuzzy thick stoner stuff. I've narrowed it down to a few options.

1) If it comes with dogears do I have to buy a Dogear pup or is it like a cradle and you can put any p90 you want in it?

2) One of the guitars is a Epiphone Wildkat which has top mounted p90s. How difficult is it to change pickups in a semi-hollow (I've never had one)? Would it be easier/better to try a magnet swap in the dogeared pup?

3) The other is an Ibanez Chris Miller and it's a solid body with a humbucker bridge with a p90 neck. Should I go with a p-rail or something more modern and ballsy (think Super Distortion) to have versatility? lt has a standard soapbar so I'm guessing any will fit.

Finally if you have any other p90 guitar recommendations (<$500 can be used) let me know. Which do you think would best match the style I'm going for?

If you like the DiMarzio Super Distortion but aren't sure what to get, don't worry too much... that specific pickup is available in a P90 drop-in replacement format size. Also a Tone Zone and I think there were a couple other options?

A few boutique winders and a couple budget brands also offer other P90-sized humbuckers, although if you were considering the Super D anyway...
