Picking a pick-up - SD SJM-2 or SJM-3

I'm after a pick-up for my Jazzmaster so wanted a few tips if possible. I was looking at the Fenders own Pure Vintage '65 set as this made the most sense to me when starting my search but I've been steered in the way of Seymour Duncan by a friend and another guy I met whilst I was holidaying in Oz. My friend owns the Seymour Duncan SJM-2 Neck Hot pick-up set which I have been lucky enough to test out. Whilst it definitely ticks a lot of the boxes, I think I'm maybe after something a little more gritty & wild. The guy I met seemed to be of a similar mindset to me when it comes to what sound we are after. We were talking the hell out of guitars and music for most of the night. He apparently owned the SJM-3 Quarter-Pound Jazzmaster Black Bridge & he reckoned that would be more up my street. As I haven't had chance to try one out, I wanted to see what people here thought. He was a pretty way-out there dude, as sound as he was, so when it actually comes to it, we may be on different pages but from what I've read elsewhere, I think the SMJ-3 would be the right choice for me. I definitely couldn't go too far wrong though with the SMJ-2. Maybe there's some others I should be throwing in the mix, any thoughts or suggestions would be great. I've found a good selection at this online shopping marketplace so I'm scrolling through those at the moment. thanks.

Welcome to the forum!

Both the Hot Jazzmaster and the QP Jazzmaster are EQ'd the same way, with a ton of bass, slightly scooped mids, and higher highs (but not as much as the bass). The Hot has less mids and treble than the QP. From your description, the QP would be my choice.

I love the SJM-1 set myself, they really shine as true JM sound. Maybe something gainier to match your needs means another type of guitar?

BTW, what kind of music, amp and effects do you play?

Thanks for the replies, food for thought. Sorry should have mentioned in my original post, I'm into playing a kind of Sea Grunge/Surf Rock, that sort of thing. Got a fender twin reverb amp & a tube driver for effects.

I suggest you browse YT for the official Duncan demos of the Vintage set and QP set for JM, may give you an idea for the right one. You can also browse other videos for the Hot set for JM, and from then on take a leap of faith. ;)
