I haven't played any of the more expensive picks made out of wood and stuff like that. The easiest way to hear what a pick can do to your sound is try it on an acoustic. I normally use Dunlop Sharpies (the blue ones 1mm I think) but on an acoustic they make the sound dull. For acoustic I like something light gauge with some flex, not paper thin, for cleaner electric stuff I also like a thinner pick, really helps bring the ring out. Most distortion stuff I use my sharpies, keeps my lows heavy and my highs warmer
