Picks

Re: Picks

Dunlop Jazz iii Carbon fibre here. Great feel.

Only time I switch on electric guitar is if I'm doing some more funky stuff, then I'll use a tortex .88 or something like that (what I use for acoustic), for some extra pick noise, especially if my compressor ain't in the chain.

Re: Picks

loving the gravity picks, I'm currently rocking the rob chapman signatures. Really big fan of this dude and the picks are awesome, great feel, very nice and pointy. also very durable.

Re: Picks

I played around with several pick thicknesses when I was starting out, and pretty quickly settled on Tortex .60s. They're stiff enough for detailed single picking but not so stiff that the thing jumps in your hands when you strum. It's a very fine balance; I find even the .58s to be too flimsy, while the .73s, though usable on acoustic, really rake my electrics' strings around when I dig in. The only thing I really didn't like was the day-glo orange color; Dunlop just had to choose that color for .60, didn't they? Anyway, I have a pack of the Pitch Black picks, and they're great, except I seem to have lost the rest of the bag because they're not day-glo orange and therefore disappear into the general detritus of my man cave :argh::banghead: Can't have it both ways, I guess.

Re: Picks

I cannot go into a music store without buying picks. Just bought a pack of Dunlop Heavy Gels and D'Addario 1 mm Classic Celluloid. It's a sickness.

Re: Picks

Call me crazy, but I love the generic red plastic guitar center picks. I like the thickness and feel. Whenever I need more I just go ask them and they give me a stack of them for free haha

Re: Picks

I've used so many different kinds of picks through the years but always go back to the Jazz III. Recently I got some Petrucci Jazz III picks and they are awesome.

Re: Picks

when using 9's and 10's I am usually right here: Dunlop Max-grip .88

and 10's and up to fatty drop tuned stuff I am usually right here: Carbon Fiber Jazz 3

All is right with the world.

Re: Picks

My criteria for picks is that they have to be cheap, and easily found in any store. No mammoth ivory or meteorite for me! I used Dunlop Gator Grip and/or Ultex (.96mm) for years. Recently I switched to the Jazz III shape, but I hate the Jazz II materiel (too clicky) and the texture bothers me. Dunlop and D'addario now make the Jazz III shape out of Delrin (the tortex material), and in 1.1mm thickness. The smaller size took a little while, but with less movement, and more accuracy, I can now play a lot smoother and faster. I understand the Jazz III obsession now! I just couldn't stand the thickness and feeling of the original plastic.

Re: Picks

When I started playing after my 10+years hiatus, I tried a few and was sold with the Dunlop tortex .60s. (yeah the dang orange....haha) Then I read an article in a music rag asking alot of pro metal guys what they used. I was blown away by how many used JAZZIIIs. I bought some and tried em and really loved em. (reds) Then they came out with the Eric Johnsons, I switched to those. Bought a gross of them cuz at that time I was in my guitar buying binge and wanted picks in all the cases.. One day I tried the Carbon fiber Max grips... GAME OVER.. Now I have a baggie full of Eric Johnsons in a drawer somewhere.. I love the max grips!! ONLY dislike is noone carries them.. I have to order them from Sweetwater..

I recently bought some Gravity and V picks and am experimenting.. But the max grips will most likely remain as the choice..

Edit: Been spending some time the Gravity and V picks.
For some reason, Im just not bonding with the Gravitys. Im not saying its the picks. The ones I ordered have defined points on them and with the hardness of the pick, I have a hard time getting even strums. Would be great if I was a ripping lead player.

I am spending more time with a few of the V picks.
I ordered:
Blackhole
Euro II
Stiletto ghost rim
Switchblade ghost rim
Medium pointed pearly gates
Small pointed Ultra Lite Ruby red
Screamer
1980
Again, the pointier ones such as the Stiletto are not meshing with my style. (or lack thereof...)
Im doing pretty well with the Pearly gates, Euro II and Small pointed Ultra LIte Ruby Red.

I notice with these, just a little bit more volume over my JAZZ III. But its not night/day. Im going to continue to spend some time with this, but I still think the Jazz III carbon fibers will remain number 1.

I have noticed that when I use the ones with the ghost rim (edges are roughed up) I get alittle bit of chirp.

Strings (even tho topic is picks, Ill toss this in):
D'addario .009s on my 25.5 scale guitars
D'addario .010s on my 24.75 scale guitars.

D'addario strings on my Basses. not sure of guages of top o my skull

and accoustics, Im still experimenting abit. My 12 string came with D'addarios so I still have the stocks on that one.

Re: Picks

I got a V-pick 1.5mm Tradition, and a Gravity .77 Classic. They sound and feel radically different... The V-pick is really stiff and dark sounding, while the Gravity flexes a bit and is really bright. I'm enjoying both of them quite a bit, and plan on buying more from each company.

That's what I use. Tortex Jazz IIIs in heavy. I love them. I couldn't find any right before my last gig and was forced to make do with other picks. Even the medium Jazz IIIs don't cut it anymore. I realized a long time ago that I choke way up on pics anyway, and quickly figured out that the Jazz III is the best size for me. I prefer a thicker pick because I feel like it gives me more control and a more precise pick attack, also a quicker string to string recovery when alternate picking.

Playing with the wrong picks all night was like wearing a pair of shoes on the wrong feet.

Re: Picks

I am very found of the Dunlop Jazz pick. I use the pitch black ones. That being said I tried the new Primetone and really prefer that when playing my acoustic. Much warmer darker sorta tone than the normal Jazz pick.

I use the purple ones for sharper, more aggresive attack and the nylon picks whenever I want to get a vintage feel.

I usually use 9s, 10s or 11s.

Re: Picks

These days I'm playing DR Tite-Fit 10-46 on electric and DR Extra Life 11-50 on acoustic both in Eb. Pick choice depends on what I'm doing or what sound I'm after. On acoustic I like Tortex .73 (yellow) or picks I punch myself from old credit cards. If I'm playing bass with a pick I like .73 Ultex. For electric I usually use Tortex 1.14 (purple) or a .73 if I'm recording something clean or want a softer sound / feel.

Re: Picks

I keep trying the boutique and esoteric stuff, different shapes and thicknesses. Wegens, Primetones, all kinds of stuff.
I keep coming back to fender heavies in celluloid.
Specifically white pearl celluloid. I find they sound and feel different to the abalone. tortoise or black looking celluloid. God knows why they do, but the picks are cheap so buy them 50 at a time and don't have to worry about losing them.

Re: Picks

Although I've recently found and fallen in love with the Dunlop Tortex .73mm (yellow) for my electric guitars, I still prefer my old standby, the Tortex .50mm (red) for acoustic. There's just something about the snappy-slappy sound they make for strummy music. Interestingly, after playing my new BC Rich Perfect 10 (10 string) for a couple of weeks now, I find that I like the .50s for it as well. Being a 10-string, it's great for many things you might play a 12-string for (i.e.: strummy stuff), but it's also a little easier to get that thinner pick between the strings when poking out a run or riff. Probably just in my head, but it sure FEELS like it's easier anyway! [emoji12]

I can't get into those boutique picks. There's one pick that all the bluegrass guys around here love. It's huge with some holes trilled in the middle. I just feel clumsy using that thing, and they cost like $20 each or something ridiculous like that. No thanks.
