pickup advice

hey everyone. this is my first time on these boards. just wondering if any of you could give me some pickup advice?

i have an agile 2800, swamp ash body, stock pups, but i wanted to replace the pups. im going for a crunchy sound sorta like meshuggah's. i know they use those 8 string axes, but i cant afford one of those

I also wanted to get a crisp clean tone in the neck. sorta like a punkish sound.

any advice?

Re: pickup advice

so jazz neck? anyone have any more suggestions for bridge? whats the difference between the invader, dimebucker, and pearly gates?

Re: pickup advice

Swamp Ash in a 2800? Since when? I thought they were Mahogany with a maple cap.

Also, while I'd be okay with a Jazz in the neck, I'd also consider the Distortion there. As for the bridge, the Invader and the DImebucker make a LOT more sense to me than the Pearly Gates...I like the Custom, but I'm not sure that it would do Meshuggah quite right. But it might. It's damn versatile. IIRC, they use Lundgren pickups, no? Unfortunately, I've never played anything with a Lundgren in it so I can't relaly compare.

Re: pickup advice

yup ..ash body. they stopped making it i think. here they had different models of the 2800.

so which is better for a lighter punkish sound in the neck? jazz or distortion?

if anyone has clips of any of the jazz, distortion, dimebucker, or invader, i'll love them forever ;) the clips on seymourduncan.com leave much to be desired

Re: pickup advice

I really liked this excerpt from one of those reviews:

2004 ASH BODY/MAPLE NECK
Has everything an LP type is supposed to have.

Anyway, I wouldn't sweat the neck pickup that much. You won't be using it much for the genres you mentioned. Either will be a good choice.

Re: pickup advice

yo man, think i finally decided on the invader bridge. not sure about neck, either jazz or 59?...this is all assuming i have money after i try to replace my amp.

Re: pickup advice

jazz deffinately for the neck. i have a 59 in the neck and love it, but not for metal. it gets muddy i find and so have a few other people (gets muddy with distortion).
