Pickup booster: old vs new

Occasionally, I want to swap my Strat's bridge pickup for a humbucker, but always chicken out. It seems like maybe the Pickup Booster's resonant frequency shift feature may be useful to me. I've never used the old or new version of the booster. Are there any notable differences?

Re: Pickup booster: old vs new

I can only speak for the original SFX-01. The resonant switch simply sucks the tone out of anything you plug into it. Don't use it. Having said that, the SFX-01 is my favorite "front-end" pedal. IMHO, YMMV. ;)

Re: Pickup booster: old vs new

How about using a graphic EQ, like the Boss GE7 or the Mesa EQ pedal? These are designed for guitar frequencies, whereas a 10-band (like the MXR) might be too broad.

One reason I like my Mesa Mark Series amps with the 5-band EQ is that I can adjust it to really fatten up my G&L Legacys with their vintage single coils.

Re: Pickup booster: old vs new

Just put a humbucker in your Strats bridge position...50/50 you will want to keep it...if not easy enough to switch back...

Re: Pickup booster: old vs new

That's why I said, YMMV. Wanna borrow mine? (It's modded.)

I’d love to, thanks for the offer.

As far as why I don’t just put a humbucker in it... I don’t know. Shane Theriot (a favorite of mine) runs a Hot Rails with two vintage style singles in his Hamer and covers tons of ground with that guitar. I’m not sure why I’m so reluctant to do it.

Re: Pickup booster: old vs new

A Hot Rails in the bridge of a Strat would be awesome. With a coil split and/or a series-parallel switch, it would do for anything except for those purist moments when only a real Strat single-coil will do.

Re: Pickup booster: old vs new

Hot Rails is a pretty far departure from a stock Strat pickup, and easily reversible. You can find them used for pretty cheap, just give it a go!

Re: Pickup booster: old vs new

Maybe not that far. All I know is, I have a Strat, that I got from forum bro Rand-O, with three HR's. (They might be Duncan Designed HR's.) I can't remember, but it sounds killer. Very Strat-ish. Not authentic. But sweet.

Re: Pickup booster: old vs new

I kinda want one of these now.*

(*I kinda want every pedal I see, but this is a special case.)

Re: Pickup booster: old vs new

These are great pedals. It is something that really comes in handy, too. I have a Strat, it works wonders on my Strat with vintage pickups in it.

Do you have better luck with the resonance switch than Artie?

Re: Pickup booster: old vs new

I have a DMZ Fast Track 2 in a bridge spot and split it for satisfying single coil tones, and a obvious rock hum bucker tones.

I am not a real particularly single coil tone guy, though....

Yeah, I tend to use the 1st position more than the 2nd.

I suspect that part of the reason my experiences with equipment is so much different than others, is because I don't play in a band situation, and therefore, almost always at fairly low volume. So, my dynamics will be completely different than others.

Re: Pickup booster: old vs new

If you dont play in a band it doesnt matter if you do any mods you dont like. Everything is reversible on a strat anyway.

Re: Pickup booster: old vs new

+1 on some sort of rail or other single size HB, like JBjr or Little 59, with a series/parallel switch. In parallel, these pickups sound very strat like, even if on the hot side.
