Pickup Choice for Flying V - METAL

Guitarist

Mesa-ologist
As I already have a nice versatile guitar - Epiphone Les Paul Std. (SH-5b, SH-1n) I'm thinking of saving for a Gibby '67 V dedicated for metal. Mahogany body and neck with rosewood fingerboard.

Just shout out any pup combos you can think of. Thanks!

I've always been skeptical of the dimebucker for some reason - no clips maybe? Anyway, do you have any experience?

Re: Pickup Choice for Flying V - METAL

BTW guys, please don't limit this thread to Seymour Duncans only. I'm open for all brands - I just want that tone!! <---Metallica (MOP/AJFA), Pantera (CFM/VDOP), etc. etc.

In other words, I need a thick, crunchy, tight attack. I also use a Single Rectifier if that helps you decide.

Re: Pickup Choice for Flying V - METAL

I had a 67 V that was THE best metal guitar ever. I sold it because my hair is too short for such a guitar LOL. ANyway, I had EMG 81's in it. Here's a pic, I'm not a home now but PM me if you want a sound sample of it through a recto.

They had limited editions last year in white with mirrored pickguard and mirroed truss cover, I bought one and a regular black one and then swapped the mirrors onto the black. Then I added the chrome knobs, chrome Sperzels, and EMG pickups.

Re: Pickup Choice for Flying V - METAL

well if its gonna be a metal axe then i personally would put in either Dimarzio X2N bridge / Dimarzio FRED neck or EMG 81 bridge / EMG 85 neck

the X2N is a somewhat bright pup and should work well in mahogany. and as for the FRED, with more distortion it somehow sounds 'tighter' and more focused which is good too for me that is. and EMGs well we all know that they're prety good for metal.

Re: Pickup Choice for Flying V - METAL

you know that Metallica used DD/59, and Pantera used XXL-500 (Bill Lawrence?) so I'm not sure what to recommend.... but maybe a DD in the bridge, for that Metallica tone, and you could always fool around with ur EQ to do Pantera

Exactly what era of Metallica used the DD/59 combo. For as far as I know they are sworn users of 81's...?

Sweet mother of Jesus - Just about my dream V right there...just lose the mirror pickguard (thanks alot Kravitz)! But seriously, that guitar shreds! Whether those pups are actually soldered to those pots or not! I'll be sending you a PM about those clips...

Kirk used a Distortion for Lightning and most of Puppets. Hetfield used a Gibson 500T for Lightning and an Invader for most of Puppets. Both switched to EMG's exlcusively by Justice until St. Anger where James is using EMG's and some unknown passives in his Gibson Les Paul. I never heard of them using a 59.

Re: Pickup Choice for Flying V - METAL

kirk used the 59n for most fade to black, sanitarium and other leads

if you ask me.. i'd stick a DD/59 combo into the axe

actually i think you might be happy with something that isn't discussed much on here...

(drum role)..... FULL SHRED!

i don't know much about this pickup but it sounds like i'd be a perfect match for your V and what your looking for. look into it. i know Prophet loves it.

I know, man. I've been reading on that pup...sounds killer. Not enough talk about it, for sure. That's why I'm leaning on the SH-6, or a 81. Anyone with experience with either or these pups talked about on this thread, feel free to reply or PM me. Thanks a lot again.

Re: Pickup Choice for Flying V - METAL

hey "-blackened-"

whats up?

you could try what IM Ken said and do the X2N/ fred combo.
i would guess that since the FRED has more mids, that it would be smooth.

:laugh2: Nice work there fellow MET fan. (Boy has that forum gone downhill... :13: ) Thanks for the reply!

BTW - Who are you in the Metallica forum? :)

:offtopic: <--Sorry guys, but I'm floating off topic now. Golly, that Metallica forum used to be great. Good information and a good amount of friendly daily users. But now, you get the same threads OVER AND OVER again and nonstop whining about countries that MET skipped! It's totally a waste of time now!

Thank you again everyone for creating the SD Forum Family (I like to refer to as the SDFF :) ) and keeping the info to the max and the bullsh!t to a minimum. You guys simply put rock. :fing2:
