I would argue that a great deal of amp worship in Stoner/Doom is because they have looked to remedy tonal problems with ever greater wattage and projection.

From what I've seen in videos, Mat rolls the volume off on his guitar for his rhythm sound.

Stoner seems to be more about feel than anything.

I am SO interested in following this thread to see what everyone says.

I can get a pretty decent Sleep tone from my Red Witch Fuzz God pedal. Mind you...they didn't even use fuzz pedals....that particular pedal seems to nail the vibe for me though.

A lot of the contemporary doom bands go with high wattage "vintage" style amps.
I see them using old Laney heads, Orange heads, Electric amps. Some even use bass heads with guitar cabs.
Some guys use stomp boxes, some use high output pickups.
I've read Matt Pike used Duncan Distortions back in the day. I think Dopesmoker was recorded with Electric amps or Green amps, both of which I think had KT-88's, which is a EL34 style tube, which translates to grainy, warm overdrive.
As far as pickups go, I think Lace has the market cornered on doom/stoner bands.
Needless to say, your tone is your own, so I guess any pickup would do.
Honestly, I got a good doom tone from my 6505 on the clean channel, pre-amp maxed out with high output pickups, no stomp boxes.
I do own a Dirty Hesher bridge, and I have to say, If you're going to hammer you speaker with volume, be ready for the fuzz; the Heshers take care of that.

I have to agree. In this statement lies the key to that type of sound. Their remedy has given birth to what many consider the "doom" tone.

Jus Osborn from Electric Wizard uses Dimarzio Super Distortions. Lots of bass, lots of mids, not much treble.

I highly recommend the BG Hellabucker! Perfect for doom; handles thick strings and low tunings beautifully, not compressed. For anything slow and heavy, look into BG Pups Hellabucker or Hellarail.

Amp & Speakers is where it's at for Doom. I think Sleep used the Laney AOR 100, which you probably know. Ever since I got my v128's, I highly recommend Eminence speakers.

If you look at the more famous Stoner & Doom band and then also at the local (i.e. lesser known bands that is into this great genre) bands, most of them use low out put stock pick ups.

Electric Wizard - stock
Matt Pike - stock (atleast in his SLEEP days)
Acid King - stock
Earth - stock
Kyuss - stock (i think)



I find that the all-mighty Duncan A2P set works perfectly for me and my Bassman.

So, i would say that any low out put PAF-style pick up will work GREAT !

I read many-a-post that the 5150/6505's are just too tight sounding to make a GOOD Stoner/Doom amp.

Any truth in that ?

A lot can be accomplished in Doom by turning your tone knob down. I play mostly Doom/Stoner and I love DDs. LACE Drop N Gains or Nitro Hemis are also great.

So many people in sludge/stoner/doom are using Lace right now. Either the two pickups you mentioned, or those at first and then eventually a signature set.

Maybe the 'truth' if you listen to the narrow minded 'Sunn, Ampeg, Orange and 24.75 inch scale guitars only!' crowd.
The 5150/6505, Dual/Triple Recto, Fryette and a number of other more 'modern' amps will do doom/sludge/stoner/post-metal just fine. Baritone guitars are cool too.
Get the right cab, dial in the right settings for your style of playing/band/whatever and away you go.
There's very few styles of heavy music that the 5150/6505 (and the 5150II/6505+) wont handle IME

You're all wrong, use your neck pickup, duh. 59 is just fine, and the right amp is way more important anyway.

If you just have to use the bridge it's tough to beat a super d.

It will mostly come down to how you play and how you e.q. your rig. It's not a hard tone to achieve with almost any guitar, pickup, and amp. I find it hard to get guitars, pickups, and amps AWAY from that sound, actually.

Totally agree with using the neck pickup and a 59 is great. I use my DD neck with the tone all the way down and get a great fuzzy doomy sound. To me, the ultimate doom tone is the Sweetleaf tone.

If you check out the lace demo that Matt Pike does, he just rolls of his tone control for the rhythms.

I use DMZ PAF 36th Anniversary's (LPC) and a P90 (SG Jr.) into a Hovercraft Andromeda & Redbear MK60 cranked to high heaven.
Hell, even my Warmoth strat with Tex-Mex SC's sounds stonerreefic through my rig.


This type of tone really doesn't have much to do with pickups. It's all about cranked tube amps with the mids up. :firedevil
