Pickup cover removal. can you return without re-potting?

Just wondering if I took off my cover on my nickel covered c5 to see if it sounds better, would I be able to put it back on without re-potting? Is it covered in wax with the cover on? Will it need to be cleaned up after the cover is removed? If I bought a nickel covered Distortion pickup would it be less highs and gain as the uncovered distortion? I would like that.

The pickup under the cover is covered in wax. Taking off a cover, in my experience, doesn't change the tone. You don't HAVE to pot a pickup with a cover, it just helps.

When you reinstall it, just squeeze it on real tight and solder it. I usually re-pot a pickup after putting a cover on, but ya never know. If you use superhighgain, I would.

Would the distortion pickup witha cover be less gainy or less highs?

Probably the same gain, but very slightly less highs. I don't notice much difference, honestly. I really just go by looks, with regards to covers or no covers.

Have you heard of 1 meg pots for more gain or signal? If so does the 1 meg compared to 500k have more highs? I am thinking of trying a 1 meg pot with my c5 for more gain but dont want more highs. I also heard that orange drop caps .022 have better mids than ceramic stock gibsons at .022. I want less highs and more mids with a tad more gain. I was thinking of getting a covered sh6 but it has almost too much gain uncovered and the highs are a bit too much.

Klink, this is why I've convinced myself that the ultimate bridge pickup, for my taste and yours, is an overwound C-5. I'm gonna go to the Duncan User Group day in April, and talk to Seymour and MJ about getting to the bottom of this. The C-5 is so close, but I think if it had a resistance between it's 14.4 and the JB's 16 something, it would turn into the most killer Custom. As for caps, I don't even mess much with that stuff, since I've become so used to warming up my tone by backing off the volume.
I don't even touch tone knobs, I just leave'em on 10.
