Pickup covers effect on tone?

Re: Pickup covers effect on tone?

some say they muffle the high end
I have never noticed that
if you put the cover on make sure you pot it

Re: Pickup covers effect on tone?

depends on the type and thickness of the plating (chrome, gold, or nickel) to me they cause some highs to be lost, especially with the Gold plated covers.

I usually take them off of my pickups that come with them.

Re: Pickup covers effect on tone?

Yeah, you'll lose some highs and maybe some harmonics and overtones. To be honest though, it's barely noticable. It's worth a try, at least.

The main thing is to do it properly. If you don't you might get a lot of noise and microphonics from them. Search here or on projectguitar.com, there's plenty of tutorials on how to do it the right way. It's really simple.

Good luck.

Re: Pickup covers effect on tone?

Hey guys. Im putting a jb in my explorer along with the stock neck and im just wondering, how will chrome covers effect the tone?

Roughly it's the same difference as going from 500 Kohm pots to 250 Kohm.

Re: Pickup covers effect on tone?

It will depend on the quality of the cover. Some are brass and you will lose a lot of high end. Also, some are very thick. Try to get nickel silver. Nickel silver will smooth the pickup out a bit but won't be muddy (as long as it's not real thick).

Maybe more like going from 300k to 250k, or even more subtle in fact. A slight diference that you may not even notice.
