Pickup Covers Help!

Hello everyone,

this is my first post here, i've been reading the forum for a while and i need a quick reply because an auction in ebay ends pretty soon. The pickups that already have a cover (either gold or nickel - doesn't matter) - can the cover be removed if a want? My biggest problem is the fading of the covers. I have a washburn for 5 years now and the golden covers have faded so much, it's almost nickel. I asked the guys at washburm and told me the covers can't be changed in those pups (stock washburn). If it is the same in the SD pups, then maybe it would be better to buy the uncovered pups and put golden covers like these myself. http://www.thomann.de/gr/goeldo_pns2g.htm

Thanks Jocelyn! That's a relief. What bothers me now is: can i somehow make the golden covers gold and shinny again? Because even if i change the pups now, the new ones will fade again after some time and the problem will hunt me! :boggled:

I don't think you can turn them gold and shinny again This is one of the reasons i have never liked gold hardware, Nickel seems to look better as it ages!

Too bad man. So the only solution to make them look fine again would be to change the covers and rewax, resolder etc?

Yup... But that is gone take a while to fade away

Well the fading procces is slow.. it would happen over a period of time..I would not bother much abt it.

If you wipe down the PU's, bridge, stop bar, etc after each time you play, gold-plated hardware will be shiny for years. If you can't spare the 10 seconds it takes to do that, then gold's not for you. I have gold hardware on 2/3's of my guitars and don't have a problem.

sorry i don't understand english very well - you mean use a tissue to remove the sweat? That was very useful - i didn't know you could prevent it that way. You are right it must have something to do with the oxidation of the metal.

Another way to keep them looking good is to wax the covers once in a while with an automotive wax, preferably one which contains Teflon but any would work. I would avoid most metal polishes as they contain abrasives which will eventually wear the plating off.....

+1 I totaly agree with that. It is realy a good habit to wipe the guitar clean after use.
